Imagine Dragons (4) – Week Of January 20, 2018

Hey guys! Last week, I set up a poll where you guys voted for your favorite song from my Top 5 of 2017. Out of the 56 votes, it looks like Something Just Like This just barely rose to first place, with Praying only being one vote short of tying. I just wanted to see what people thought of my Top 5. These two songs are definitely fan favorites and frankly there's nothing to not love about them. I also set up a new grading scale for the Top 20 Reviews. My old system was identical to the grading system in school. But I decided to change it to make it more fair. This new system begins this week and will be the new permanent grading scale. Before we get to this week's Fresh 45, here are the songs we're saying goodbye to this week.

New Entrants
~ Our lone new entrant this week comes from Maroon 5 with the follow-up to What Lovers Do. This one is Wait and there really isn't anything exciting about this one. It's definitely better than Don't Wanna Know and Cold, but it's not the Maroon 5 I used to know. Once upon a time, they used to be my favorite band. But they've been disappointing me lately. Like I said when this debuted on Hit-Bound, Adam Levine has essentially taken over the band. They used to be pop-rock and you could tell there was a band. But here they're just pop and anyone that's somehow not familiar with Maroon 5 probably wouldn't know that this is a band, as opposed to a solo artist. I find this ironic since it seems that are more members now than there were before. Of course I'm just making an assumption. I don't know anything for sure. But I don't remember there being seven band members. They're literally Maroon 7. You'd think this would mean that they'd be more pop-rock. But nope. Like I said, it's better than Don't Wanna Know and Cold. Adam does decent on the vocals. The chorus is kind of catchy. I don't love the production overall. The song itself is okay, but nothing memorable. Frankly, I'm just glad they didn't bring in some mediocre rapper or a singer that does not sound good with the band like they did on Cold and Help Me Out.

Hit-Bound
~ Here is the Hit-Bound list.

  • NF – Let You Down
  • Kesha/The Dap-King Horns – Woman
  • Camila Cabello – Never Be The Same
  • Alan Walker/Noah Cyrus/Digital Farm Animals – All Falls Down
  • P!nk – Beautiful Trauma
  • Spencer – Whatever
  • Troye Sivan – My My My!
  • Clean Bandit/Julia Michaels – I Miss You
  • Imagine Dragons – Whatever It Takes
  • The Chainsmokers – Sick Boy (DEBUT)
  • Wolves – Animal
  • All Time Low – Last Young Renegade
  • AJR/Rivers Cuomo – Sober Up
  • Sofi Tukker/NERVO – Best Friend

~ It took me a few listens to grow into Sick Boy. While it's no Something Just Like This, I like this song. Andrew Taggart takes on the vocals once again and I think he sounds good here. The production is pretty good and the song is catchy. I'll talk more about it when it debuts.

Top 5 Hit-Bound Picks
1. P!nk – Beautiful Trauma
2. Troye Sivan – My My My!
3. Imagine Dragons – Whatever It Takes
4. Clean Bandit/Julia Michaels – I Miss You
5. Kesha/The Dap-King Horns – Woman

Beautiful Blurbs
~ I know it may seem like I grew to hate Thunder very quickly. But the truth is, I never actually loved this song. I only took it because it was better than Believer at the time. But even at first, I found it quite mediocre. It took several listens for me to be able to tolerate it. But now that I've come around to Believer, Thunder became extremely mediocre again and the fact that it's so popular really only makes matters worse. So I'm not very thrilled to see it back at #1. I'll take any song in the Top 10 over this any day, even Love So Soft even though I'm not a fan of that one either. But Thunder is basically Imagine Dragons hitting rock bottom. Though my opinions on this and its predecessor have changed a lot, I'm believe my thoughts currently will remain as they are.

~ Jumping up to #2 this week, we have Charlie Puth – How Long. I'm not too surprised by this given how successful its predecessor was. While I don't like this as much as Attention, I'd certainly be cool with this reaching the top spot. Charlie Puth has shown some true potential with these two songs and I'm glad they're both successful.

~ To some people's distaste, we have Bebe Rexha/Florida Georgia Line – Meant To Be at #3 this week. I know I have the unpopular opinion among the critics. But I can't find anything to hate about this song. I get that some may not like Florida Georgia Line essentially taking over the song. I do recommend this version if you're one of those people. But I like this song and I want to see it at #1. It's a big deal for Bebe Rexha and she's very talented. I'm glad she finally has a big hit.

~ Walk The Moon – One Foot made a really nice jump this week into the Top 15. I'm glad to see this one becoming a hit. It's very deserving and it's one of the best songs out there right now. It may not hit the height of Shut Up and Dance, but it's still a whole lot of fun.

~ Louis Tomlinson – Miss You also made a nice jump into the Top 25. It seemed like it wasn't really going to go anywhere, but I'm glad it was able to make that leap. This song is very underrated.

~ MAX/Gnash – Lights Down Low made an interesting jump this week back into the Top 30 from the Bottom 5. I'm okay with this. I still like this song as strange as it may seem. There's just something about it that makes it such a good song.

~ As far as our exit goes, I'm pleased to see this one make its departure. It was certainly long overdue and was never even anything special to begin with. But at least it's finally gone.

~ I've been really enjoying both Him & I and One Foot this past week. So I consider them both to be the best song on the countdown. Fun fact: Both songs have the "cross my heart, hope to die" lines in the chorus.

  1. First, and if I'm correct, this is the first time a song in orange has hit #1 since I don't know how long?

    1. It's definitely been a while. The last song to be in orange at #1 I believe was Maroon 5 - Sugar from 2015. Quite a long run if I do say so myself.

    2. Yeah, I saw. I've been reading your older posts as of late. Sorry it had to ruin your birthday weekend.

And on that note, my birthday is coming up in a few weeks. I turn 26 in February.

    3. *Sees Thunder in orange*

      WHAT THE FUCK!!!

    4. DO NOT SAY THE F WORD, ANONYMOUS!!!!!!

      Delete
    5. Yeah, after it hit #1 again, something in the back of my mind told me that Adrian would pull the trigger and turn it orange at some point in time. Although Thunder isn't quite a favorite of mine from the Imagine Dragons and I prefer their older singles, it sucks for me and most of the blogging community to see it happen.

      Delete
    6. Montavis: Oh cool. I didn't realize you were that old given that a lot of people here are really young (with the exception of Scott and Miles, who I believe is around the same age as me).

Anonymous: I really don't think this is that surprising with how much I've criticized it recently.

      Delete
    7. Is Adrian going to grow back into Thunder again when it leaves the countdown?

      Delete
    8. Anonymous: Likely never, since he said he never really liked the song to begin. Plus, it hitting #1 again this week only made it worse on his end.

      Delete
    9. That's usually for songs that are good, but I get sick of. Thunder is just a bad song. So the chances of that happening are VERY slim.

      Delete
    10. Now, are you working on the Hits 1 Year-End countdown post? I’m still waiting for it.

      Delete
    11. ATR/Anonymous: Shut the fuck up. I'm tired of you whining about this. He's obviously trying to get it out.

      Delete
    12. Adrian: It's Strip that Down.

  3. Now I know we have opposite opinions for sure. I have Thunder in purple while you have it in orange.

Bad news for you and me: Stay just played again. It could re-enter. Good news: Let You Down played after that. So we could have that debuting.

    1. I don’t think Stay should re-enter, Dylan.

      Delete
    2. And yeah, I heard Let You Down today too. I think it’s going to make the countdown this week.

      Delete
    3. Dylan: Actually this isn't the first time. This blogging community is divided on certain songs. For example, Jack had X Ambassadors – Renegades in orange while Adrian had it in purple at some point in time.

      Delete
    4. Wow. I thought Jack would like that type of song.

      Delete
    5. Nope. I don't think he ever likes that type of song and even if he does, he grows out of them quickly.

See, Jack is a blogger who seems to love female artists like Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, to name a few. Almost all of their songs end up in either green or purple on his end.

      Delete
    6. Yeah, I guess I forgot about that.

      Delete
    7. My favorite artists are Shawn Mendes and Ed Sheeran and whenever one of their songs debuted I had it in Purple

      Delete
  4. What are your Bottom 5 picks, Adrian?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I was thinking about adding that.

      1. Thunder
      2. Strip That Down
      3. Rockstar
      4. I Like Me Better
      5. Look What You Made Me Do

      Delete
    2. Geez, it's very telling that Thunder is your least favorite song on the countdown in the presence of Strip That Down and rockstar, both of which you always hated. Wow.

      Delete
  5. And another time Adrian had a song in Orange and someone else had it in Purple was with Bad Liar And Gold And other Times had a #1 song in Orange was with Timber in 2014, All About That Bass in 2014, and Thinking Out Loud in 2015

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You're right about the first two, but you're wrong about Thinking Out Loud. The only orange song that hit #1 in 2015 was Sugar, and that was on his birthday weekend.

      Delete
  6. And That’s What I Like in 2017 but since that countdown post was rushed there was no color code but it would have been in Orange that week

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I actually knew that already. Well technically, this was his first orange song at #1 since Sugar, but yeah his countdown was very rushed hence why we never got to see his reaction or the color code as you mentioned.

      Delete
    2. But if his countdown post wasn’t rushed on 4/22/17 that would have been his first Orange song at #1 since That’s What I Like 4/22/17 that time finishing up his final year in high school and also what was your #1 song on your birthday weekend in 2015 and when is your birthday ? Mine is on 4/4/02

      Delete
  7. Nice post and:

    *sees Thunder in orange*

  8. Yeah, Stay has had 6(?) spins today. It is re-entering. Fuck.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Eh, I doubt it. Remember, That's What I Like by Bruno Mars got airplay even after it left the countdown a month ago, but it never re-entered. So no need to worry about it.

      Delete
    2. That song didn't have the success that Stay had. Usually, songs with major success (With exceptions of a few songs) re-enter after they leave. Also, TWIL didn't have a lot of airplay the day after it left.

    1. And This Is What You Came For, and Boom Clap, and Uma Thurman as well. These songs were once green at one point in time.

      Delete
    3. I also think Boom Clap was also purple once in its tenure.

    4. And he had Thinking Out Loud briefly in green but he hated it in 2015 and I’m very surprised Thinking Out Loud since the Fall of 2017

    2. *Sees Gummo at 13* Why??? Although, I'm happy Lights Down Low and Stir Fry are jumping.

      Delete
    3. Yeah, I don't know why Gummo is getting popular either. But in other good news, it's nice to see New Rules make its entrance in the Top 10. Same with Bad At Love, which is now in the Top 5.

      Delete
    4. That's good for the former. Let's see if the successor which debuted this week gets the same success. Also, Filthy dropped 20 spots. Looks like radio is the only thing keeping it alive.

    5. Not for long, though. It has just over 50 spins today. Not a good sign of what's to come. But then again, his Super Bowl performance is coming up, which might give it a boost. I don't know yet.

  15. New on Hits 1: The Middle by Zedd featuring Maren Morris and Grey

    1. Just listened to it. Not good. But frankly, I'm not that surprised after Stay and Get Low. This is probably the worst of the bunch. I don't know what the hell happened to Zedd.

    2. Haven't heard yet. At least that means we have a debut this weekend.

    3. I had a feeling that you wouldn't like The Middle, and I was proven right. It's very shocking (to me at least) that you've not been very fond of Zedd's latest releases. WOW.

    4. I used to really like him. But I feel like he's been selling out lately. His songs have become very bland ever since Starving and nothing he has released lately has impressed me. It's a shame.

  19. Hey, Adrian. About that last blurb where you talked about Him & I and One Foot both having the same line, "Cross my heart, hope to die" in the chorus? Well, guess what? I heard both of these songs back to back on my way home from work. Just wanted to let you know. :)

It feels like Starving 2.0 (Probably because it has both Zedd and Grey in it.) I don't like it as much as Starving however. I can tolerate it more then Stay (Mainly because I'm pissed off at it right now.)

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yeah, it very similar to that and Stay. Plus, I'm not sold that Zedd is selling out (though I'll admit that Get Low was pretty mediocre). I'll talk more about it soon. (SPOILER ALERT: I have it in green. Sorry, Adrian.)

    2. That's fine, Montavis. It's definitely not the first time we've disagreed on a song. But it's very likely that this song will come with a little mini-rant from me.

      Delete
    3. Well, it won't stick with me, though. I don't like it like that, so I won't be as heartbroken.

To me it sounds like a lot of your favorite artists have been disappointing you lately seeing as their latest releases are not to your liking.

      Delete
    4. Yeah, but it happens. Very few artists are perfect and I think everyone is bound to have a shitty release at some point in time.

      Delete
    5. Get Low was pretty mediocre. It seems like Zedd uses the same elements for songs. Which is why all his songs sound the same.

  23. Hmmm...I haven't seen "." post anything about the current rankdown. No word on when he's going to reveal #30 yet. But for now, let's talk about the world of music.

Good news for some: Despacito by Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber has officially left the Hot 100 this week, as well as That's What I Like by Bruno Mars. Yup.

  24. How is Shape of You still there........
Also I prefer the version of Meant to Be with Florida Georgia Line singing in the beginning :) it makes the song sound much more country, and country is one of my fav genres.
Also All These Years by Camila Cabello should also debut on to hitbound, it's such a good song :D

    1. No, All These Years shouldn’t debut Hit Bound early. Never Be The Same needs to hit the Top 5 on the countdown then this song should debut Hit Bound.

      Delete
    2. Why do certain songs have to hit certain spots for some songs to enter Hit-Bound?

      Delete
    3. What Dylan said. It doesn't make sense really. Even if Never Be The Same were to hit the Top 5, there's no way Hits 1 would do such a thing. Usually, they pick up songs if it's confirmed to be the next single from a certain artist, not when a song hits a new peak.

  25. Supplies debuted pop radio. Fantastic. *Sarcasm*

  26. Perfect by Ed Sheeran played then Perfect by One Direction played on Hits 1. LOL

    3. Just heard a little bit of it...and it's okay I guess. It's better than Don't Mind, so I'll give him that. But still not quite impressed.

    1. Ed Sheeran is quitting music this week, 'cause he's getting married.

  31. So, Drake's latest single, God's Plan, is still #1 on iTunes by a huge lead and it's leading big on Spotify as well. I have a feeling it's going to end up debuting in the Top 3.

But honestly, I can't be the only one who is tired of Drake already.

  32. And I want Shawn Mendes to make new music because he hasn’t made new music in a while

Best Friend: Very successful on alternative and pop radio.

Sober Up: Same as above but it hasn't debuted on pop radio.

Whatever It Takes: It is Imagine Dragons for crying out loud!

Sick Boy: Yeah yeah it just debuted Hit-Bound last week, but it has debuted pop radio and has been gaining in sales.
