New Entrants
~ First up, we have a song that's been around for a while. It's Love Lies by Khalid and Fifth Harmony's Normani Kordei. It's from the soundtrack for the movie Love, Simon, which is a great movie by the way. I think the song is really good and probably Khalid's best so far. He has some great vocals on here and he and Normani sound really good together. I like the production and the vibe the song gives off. It's an enjoyable listen and I hope the song does well here. It seemed to have been gaining some steam lately. So hopefully it sticks around.

~ Next we have Drake after Scorpion was released a little while ago. This week, we have In My Feelings. We don't get very much Drake on here, so I don't usually have an opportunity to talk about him. I think he's talented and I like a lot of his songs. But it seems like he gets a little bit too much praise in my opinion. Nowadays, whatever he puts out is pretty much destined to be successful no matter the quality. So basically, I think he's overrated. But his music is not bad. In fact, Nice For What has been my jam for quite a while now. He has a few memorable songs. In My Feelings is good to say the very least. I've always liked Drake's singing voice as I've heard in some of his older hits. The beat is pretty good, but it's nothing amazing if I'm being totally honest. I wouldn't mind some success out of it because it is a good song. But it's not that special, so multiple weeks at #1 probably won't be taken very well by me. We'll see because I don't think this song will last very long with how Hits 1 treats Drake.

~ Finally we have more Imagine Dragons with their new single, Natural. I talked a lot about this one last week when it debuted on Hit-Bound. It's very similar to Believer in terms of the production, style, and Dan Reynolds' vocals. The band took a little bit of a risk here. But it kind of worked out and I'm glad they went this route instead of giving us another radio-destined single like Thunder. Natural is an enjoyable song and I think Dan Reynolds sounds really good on here. It does seem like a little bit of yelling just like in Believer. But that doesn't bother me this time around. It's a good song and I know it'll be successful on here.

Best Debut of the Week: Khalid/Normani – Love Lies

Hit-Bound
~ Here is the Hit-Bound list.

  • Dennis Lloyd – Nevermind
  • PRETTYMUCH – Summer On You (DEBUT)
  • Big Boi – All Night
  • Dan + Shay – Tequila
  • Bebe Rexha – I'm a Mess
  • Justin Timberlake – SoulMate
  • Zedd/Elley Duhé – Happy Now (DEBUT)
  • Train/Cam/Travie McCoy – Call Me Sir
  • The Chainsmokers/Emily Warren – Side Effects (DEBUT)
  • Years & Years – If You're Over Me
  • Brown & Gray – Top Down
  • Charlie Puth – The Way I Am
  • lovelytheband – Broken
  • Ariana Grande – God Is A Woman
  • Weezer – Africa (DEBUT)

~ PRETTYMUCH are back and they've brought a song that's even less interesting than Would You Mind. Summer On You is not something I can ever picture myself going out of my way to listen to. The production is underwhelming and their vocals aren't good enough to make up for it. So we basically just have another boyband trying way too hard to be interesting and unique and it's really not working.

~ Happy Now is not good and this should come as no surprise with how much I've slammed Zedd lately. I like the first 30 or so seconds of it. But then it all just goes bad when that mediocre beat comes in. The vocals are decent here, but the production is so bland and generic that I don't think I even need to explain it. Just listen to the song and you'll know (or don't and save your ears). This is not EDM, this is generic pop.

~ The Chainsmokers have been getting quite the criticism lately for essentially "copying" Twenty One Pilots by going for more of a yellow theme. These guys have been probably planning this for a while and Twenty One Pilots kinda just came out of nowhere with new stuff. But whatever. This week they bring Side Effects, which is a big step up from their latest stuff. My criticism and advice was well-taken here. Instead of Drew Taggart singing, they brought Emily Warren, who has made a few appearances on their songs in the past including their hit Paris. I think she sounds pretty good on here. They also stepped up their game with the production. This song is not lazy like songs like Somebody and Everybody Hates Me. Side Effects is actually an enjoyable song. It still doesn't top their older work, but I can appreciate improvement.

~ After being around for quite a while and being very successful on SiriusXM Alt Nation, we have Weezer's cover of Africa by Toto making its debut here. I think it's a very good cover of an iconic song. Rivers Cuomo does a very nice job with the vocals. The cover actually sounds very similar to the original. Overall I think it's very good and I'm glad it's here.

Top 5 Hit-Bound Picks
1. Weezer – Africa
2. Dan + Shay – Tequila
3. Bebe Rexha – I'm A Mess
4. Years & Years – If You're Over Me
5. The Chainsmokers/Emily Warren – Side Effects

In My Blurbs
~ 5 Seconds Of Summer – Youngblood is up in the Top 5, which comes as no surprise since Hits 1 shows favoritism towards the group. Though the song is actually a hit and I do really like it, so it's very worthy of being up here. I can see up at #1 sometime soon.

~ However, Dua Lipa – IDGAF has been losing a lot of steam lately, yet it's still up in the Top 10, similar to Kelly Clarkson – Love So Soft, which was a hit here and almost nowhere else. So I think it's time to let this one drop. One Kiss is the song more worthy of the Top 10.

~ My heart goes out to Demi Lovato as she has been struggling with a recent overdose. That is very scary and hopefully she's getting better. Tell Me You Love Me dropped out of the Top 30. So I'm hoping it can stick around for a little while longer.

~ The jump from Hundred Handed – Too Good did not last long. And as usual, I'm not surprised. I actually expected this drop because I have a hard time seeing a song like this doing well on here.

~ Songs like Lauv – I Like Me Better and Bazzi – Mine need to exit as soon as possible. I don't get why the latter is a hit and I'm not sure why the former is still here. Seriously, who the hell still listens to this???

~ As far as the exits go, good riddance to Psycho. Post Malone does have talent. It doesn't show on this song and I'm glad we finally get to say goodbye to it. Perfect had a very good run on here and it lasted with me the whole time, which I'm glad about. It's a sweet little love song that I'm glad was successful. We probably won't get any Ed Sheeran for a little while, but he had a good run. Finally, we say our farewells to the Bad Wolves cover of Zombie. The original was great and I thought the cover was really good. It was a very nice tribute to Dolores O'Riordan and I'm glad the song actually had some success on here despite not exactly being a huge hit elsewhere. So yeah. I'm pleased with this song's run and I'm almost certain you'll see it again in December when I count down my Top 45 songs of 2018.

~ Not very many blurbs this week due to not very much happening. I do however want to give an album recommendation. Daughtry have released their most recent album, Cage To Rattle, this past Friday and I thought it was a very enjoyable listen. I've been a fan of these guys and I love Chris Daughtry's voice. So it's nice to finally get some new music from them. So I definitely recommend the album. A couple of my favorite songs include Just Found Heaven, Death Of Me, Deep End, and White Flag.

New Entrants
~ Not a very exciting group of debuts this week. First up, we have MNEK with Hailee Steinfeld on the song Colour. MNEK, being a British singer and all, I'm sure is more popular over in the UK. He was featured in Zara Larsson's hit Never Forget You, which I really liked. Although Larsson was the stronger vocalist, I still liked MNEK's contribution. I kinda have mixed feelings on Colour. I think the vocals here are really good. Both artists sound great together. The lyrical content is good too talking about someone making another person's life more exciting and bringing color into their life. Though the production here is slightly annoying and that's enough to make the song blue. Though I will say the vocals are really good and that alone could potentially boost this song into green territory in the future. No promises though. I don't even think this song will last very long. But we'll just have to wait and see.

~ Next we have Post Malone with the follow-up to Psycho, titled Better Now. I think this song is a big step up from its predecessor. Post Malone shows here that he actually does have a pretty good voice. He showcases his range much more on here than his previous singles. I will say the production is still a little bland. But I really can't expect much from a hip-hop track nowadays. I'm just happy with how much of an improvement this is. I can see myself putting this song in green sometime in the future. I'll give it more listens to see if it's worthy.

~ Next we have Home With You by Madison Beer. I don't really have much to say about this one. It's a decent song. Madison Beer has a unique voice. I don't love it. But I can appreciate the fact that she has a distinguishable voice that can allow me to recognize her just from hearing her sing. The production is pretty good. I guess the song is just not very memorable. I can't see myself remembering this song a few months after it leaves. That's really the only criticism I have. It doesn't stand out very much from what we usually hear on the radio.

~ Finally we have the return of Twenty One Pilots. My brother, who is a big fan of Twenty One Pilots, has been anticipating new music from them. So he's enjoying these new songs right now. They debut this week with Jumpsuit. I don't really like the song, but I don't hate it. I do kinda like where they're going though in a way. I think the instrumentation and production here are really good. It's very energetic and it would make an enjoyable listen. The problem is Tyler Joseph's vocals. I think he sounds kind of annoying. He's one of those singers who can sound pretty good if he uses his voice well. He does not do that here and it's a shame. The song would be pretty enjoyable if it were sung by another artist. So I can only say the song is okay. It's not bad, but it's not something I'll be listening to in my free time. I'll have to be cautious about where I say these things because I don't think it'll take much to trigger their obnoxious fanbase.

Best Debut of the Week: Post Malone – Better Now

Hit-Bound
~ Here is the Hit-Bound list.

  • Bebe Rexha – I'm a Mess
  • Charlie Puth – The Way I Am (DEBUT)
  • Brown & Gray – Top Down
  • Imagine Dragons – Natural (DEBUT)
  • Dennis Lloyd – Nevermind
  • Big Boi – All Night
  • The Chainsmokers/Drew Love – Somebody
  • lovelytheband – Broken
  • Julia Michaels/Trippie Redd – Jump
  • Ariana Grande – God Is A Woman (DEBUT)
  • Train/Cam/Travie McCoy – Call Me Sir
  • Justin Timberlake – SoulMate
  • Dan + Shay – Tequila
  • Years & Years – If You're Over Me (DEBUT)
  • BTS – Fake Love

~ Of all the songs Charlie Puth could've selected from Voicenotes, he chose The Way I Am as the next single. This is nowhere near as good as Attention and Done For Me. The song is underwhelming and not in a good way. I'll save my words though for when it inevitably debuts.

~ After skipping over Born To Be Yours by Kygo and this next band, Hits 1 immediately picks up on the new single from Imagine Dragons titled Natural. I think these guys took a little bit of a risk here. But I think it worked out well in the end. Comparing it to their recent singles, it's most similar to Believer, which I've come around to as you know. I think Dan Reynolds sounds really good here and I feel like he's testing how far his voice can go. He's a great vocalist and it's nice to see him not playing it safe with something like Thunder. The production is good. Enjoyable song overall.

~ God Is A Woman seems like the kind of song I'll have to listen to more to grow into it. First time listening to it, it didn't really get my attention until the end with the fantastic background vocals and Ariana really showing her talent. I'll listen to it more this next week, but for now I'll just say it's okay.

~ We finally have some more Years & Years on Hits 1. I think their music is underrated and I'm glad one of their songs managed to make its way here. If You're Over Me is a fun song and one that I can see myself enjoying for a while. The production is nice and upbeat and I like the vocals. More on it if it debuts.

Top 5 Hit-Bound Picks
1. Dan + Shay – Tequila
2. Bebe Rexha – I'm A Mess
3. Imagine Dragons – Natural
4. Julia Michaels/Trippie Redd – Jump
5. Years & Years – If You're Over Me

Blurbsuit
~ Panic! At The Disco's two songs switch spots this week with High Hopes being the lucky one up at #3. I can definitely see this as a #1 song in the coming weeks and I look forward to it. Meanwhile, Say Amen falls to #11 because god forbid we have two songs from the same artist in the Top 10.

~ Back in the Top 10, we have Foster The People – Sit Next To Me (yay!) and Dua Lipa – IDGAF (ehhhh...). The former can stay as long as it likes. While the latter is not being an annoyance by any means, I'd appreciate it if it weren't hogging up a spot in the Top 10.

~ Our two good debuts from last week made some nice jumps into the Top 20 this week. So that makes me pretty happy. I see potential in both of them.

~ Hundred Handed – Too Good finally made that jump we've been waiting for all the way up to #21. I don't think it'll last very long up there. So I'm enjoying it right now.

~ We had drops out of the Top 20 from Halsey – Alone and Charlie Puth/Kehlani – Done For Me. The former is still good, but I've been listening to it less and less lately. Though the latter disappoints me, especially when I look at what's next in line for Charlie Puth.

~ And just like that, Liam Payne – Familiar drops just outside of the Bottom 5. With the exception of Strip That Down, this guy just can't get a hit. Even though his last two attempts were pretty bad, I actually enjoyed Familiar. Oh well.

~ As far as the exits go, New Rules should've never re-entered. Him & I had a good run and it's nice to see it go now that it has no meaning to it anymore. Fake Friends did decent-ish here. I don't really mind it leaving. At least it didn't just do poorly. Fun fact: Fake Friends was the #1 song on the Hits 1 Unknown Songs Rankdown. Finally, I'm happy with how These Days did for a song that wasn't a massive hit here in the US. It did better than I thought it would and I'm glad. Rudimental deserve all the hits they can get. So that song will be missed by me.

New Entrants
~ First up, we have the return of Alessia Cara with a song I'm kind of indifferent on. She debuts with Growing Pains, which is easily her weakest single so far not including her appearance on Stay by Zedd. It's not bad by any means. But there's a lot that can be improved upon here. I don't think there's a single thing I love about this song. I get that she was going for something new here. But when I first listened to this, the first word that popped into my head to describe the song was "awkward" and I kinda have to stick with it. It's a very weird track in my honest opinion. The production just sounds odd throughout pretty much the whole song. I tried getting into it, but I just couldn't. Her vocals despite seeming a little restricted at certain points are pretty good. Though I don't love how there are two layers of her voice in the chorus and if you listen to it, you'll know what I'm talking about. The song is similar to Wild Things in a way, but that song was a lot better and didn't sound as strange as this one. Maybe it's just because I had high expectations for Alessia Cara after Scars To Your Beautiful, which I think is an amazing and beautiful song. This is a massive step down in my opinion and I doubt that will change. But who knows? We'll see how well it does.

~ Next we have the return of Fall Out Boy with my favorite track from their excuse of an album titled MANIA. This song is The Last Of The Real Ones. This song similar to previous single Champion has a nice rock vibe to it that reminds me of older Fall Out Boy days, which is kind of what I was looking for in their new album. While I was pretty disappointed for the most part, The Last Of The Real Ones was a definite stand-out track and I'm glad it made its way over here onto Hits 1. The production is very good and the instrumentation is pretty solid here. Patrick Stump sounds really good on vocals, especially in the verses. I think it's a very catchy song and the chorus is very enjoyable. I would really like to see this song do well. I don't really know how it'll do. But hopefully it doesn't just do poorly. It deserves some success for being one of the few good Fall Out Boy songs these days.

~ Finally we have the long-awaited return of the Backstreet Boys with Don't Go Breaking My Heart. I've always been a fan of these guys and I still come back to some of their biggest songs like I Want It That Way and Everybody (Backstreet's Back). They're very talented and I'm glad they made their return this year. Don't Go Breaking My Heart is a really great song in a lot of ways. The production and piano sound really good and I really like the vocals here. I really like the lyrics as the song is about not wanting your heart broken in a relationship. As someone who has been in a relationship for almost two months now, this is definitely something I can relate to. Overall, I think the song is great and I really hope it does well. Backstreet Boys are back and they deserve another hit.

Best Debut of the Week: Backstreet Boys – Don't Go Breaking My Heart

Hit-Bound
~ Here is the Hit-Bound list.

  • Julia Michaels/Trippie Redd – Jump
  • Justin Timberlake – SoulMate (DEBUT)
  • lovelytheband – Broken
  • Dan + Shay – Tequila
  • Big Boi – All Night
  • Madison Beer – Home With You
  • Bebe Rexha – I'm a Mess
  • Train/Cam/Travie McCoy – Call Me Sir
  • MNEK/Hailee Steinfeld – Colour
  • The Chainsmokers/Drew Love – Somebody (DEBUT)
  • Brown & Gray – Top Down (DEBUT)
  • Post Malone – Better Now
  • Cole Redding – Father Father
  • BTS – Fake Love
  • Dennis Lloyd – Nevermind

~ Justin Timberlake releases another new single within one year of Man Of The Woods having been released. SoulMate is a step down from Say Something from earlier this year. Though the song is better than a lot of the tracks from Man Of The Woods. Few songs from that album were actually better than this like Montana and Breeze Off The Pond. This new song is good, I guess. I like his vocals. But there isn't much else to the song. So I don't really know what else to say. I'll have more if it manages to debut on the countdown.

~ The Chainsmokers continue to bring more mediocre songs with less of what made them unique as this week, they debut with Somebody. This is probably the worst of the bunch since Sick Boy. These guys have gotten very lazy with the production and I think Drew Love's voice is annoying. The only thing decent about this song is the vocal performance from Drew Taggart. But even then, I'm still getting a little tired of his voice. The Chainsmokers have some serious work to do if they are to impress me and most of America again.

~ New duo Brown & Gray debut on Hit-Bound this week with Top Down. I think this song is very enjoyable. I like the instrumentation. I also really like male and female duets and these two are no exception. Overall, it's a good song that I wouldn't mind seeing some success out of.

~ Twenty One Pilots released a couple new songs recently titled Jumpsuit and Nico and The Niners. I'm sure we'll see the former on the countdown soon. So I'll hold off on giving my opinions until then.

Top 5 Hit-Bound Picks
1. Dan + Shay – Tequila
2. Julia Michaels/Trippie Redd – Jump
3. Bebe Rexha – I'm A Mess
4. Brown & Gray – Top Down
5. Justin Timberlake – SoulMate

The Last Of The Real Blurbs
~ Shawn Mendes unexpectedly rose to #1 this week with In My Blood. I have to say, it did take quite a while to get there. But I don't really mind because it is a good song. We do have better, but this is pretty good for the time being.

~ Meanwhile, Selena Gomez rises to #2 with Back To You, making it her highest-peaking song since Come & Get It hit #2 back in 2013. I would totally be cool with this song at #1. It's something I've been listening to quite a bit lately. I mean seriously. That beginning always manages to pull me into the song.

~ Zedd/Maren Morris – The Middle is down to #4 this week, which is the lowest it's been in months. I really think it's time to get this song out of the Top 10. Seriously. I've had it with this song.

~ Bazzi – Mine took a very nice drop out of the Top 30 this week. I still don't understand why this song is popular. It's just way too childish for my taste and it has only gotten more annoying with each listen. Hopefully we can get this out of here soon.

~ Hundred Handed – Too Good and Sugarland/Taylor Swift – Babe don't seem to be doing very well at the moment. And for some reason, neither of them surprise me. Hopefully they can hold out for a little while longer.

~ As far as the exits go, we lost the three oldest songs on the countdown. Imagine Dragons – Thunder, having been the oldest, should've left a long time ago. I'm glad it didn't stay way too long. This one died out pretty fast for me, mostly because I realized just how bad of a song it is. Camila Cabello – Havana and Hailee Steinfeld/Florida Georgia Line – Let Me Go both debuted on the same week and had their success at different times (Let Me Go took much longer to rise to the top). Both songs are still good, especially Let Me Go, and I'm glad they did as well as they did. They will be missed by me.

Taylor Swift (1) – Week Of July 7, 2018

Others have noticed this already, but they apparently changed SiriusXM channel 3 from Venus to a Dave Matthews Band radio station. I thought that was kind of stupid because they played pretty good music on Venus. So yeah. Bad move, SiriusXM. Other than that, I have nothing interesting to say. No songs leaving the countdown this week. So let's get right into it!

Biggest Jump Of The Week: Panic! At The Disco – High Hopes (+22)

Let Blurbs Be Right
~ I figured Delicate would be #1 this week. It's fine by me for the time being. It's a pretty good song, but it's not something really worthy of spending multiple weeks at the top. I'd rather have Say Amen at #1.

~ Selena Gomez – Back To You made the jump into the Top 5 I'm sure we were expecting at some point. I'm glad Hits 1 is able to decipher which of her songs are Top 10 worthy while letting her shitty songs like Bad Liar and Fetish do relatively poorly in comparison. That being said, Back To You is very much welcome.

~ New to the Top 10, we have 5 Seconds Of Summer – Youngblood. Even if it's not a big hit, it's a great song and I'm glad it's doing well. Hits 1 may overpraise 5SOS at times, but they do have some pretty good songs like this one. I certainly wouldn't mind seeing this at #1 at some point in time.

~ Panic! At The Disco – High Hopes caught on pretty quickly coming in right outside of the Top 10 on its second week. It's still a really great song and I have high hopes that it'll do well on here. Also, congrats to Brendon on the #1 album!

~ A few drops occurred this week, including Bebe Rexha/Florida Georgia Line – Meant To Be out of the Top 20 and Walk The Moon – One Foot out of the Top 30. The former I'm okay with because I am growing out of the song a little bit. The latter is a little saddening, but it did pretty well here at least. Though I'm still kinda pissed about how The Middle blocked it from even just one week at #1.

~ I'd appreciate a switch in positions between Dua Lipa – IDGAF and Calvin Harris/Dua Lipa – One Kiss. One of them is decent, while the other is pretty good and deserves to be higher on here.

~ I have a feeling Psycho is starting to run out of steam on here. Hopefully this one can leave us soon. If I had to choose, I'd easily pick Better Now over this song.

~ Does anyone actually still listen to Thunder? Didn't think so. Can we PLEASE get this off the countdown soon? I'm sure Hits 1's love for Imagine Dragons is the only reason why this song is still here.

~ So G-Eazy and Halsey broke up and I can't say I'm surprised. I personally did not think they would last. Though it's now hard to listen to Him & I since the song has become virtually meaningless. It's getting old anyway, so I'd appreciate if it left soon.

~ Somehow Camila Cabello – Havana is still here. I don't mind the song, but this is a little too long. However, I'd much prefer if we got rid of Never Be The Same. This countdown will be much better off without screeching Camila.

~ Nothing interested happened on Hit-Bound other than Dennis Lloyd – Nevermind returning. Backstreet Boys still have the best song on there and my opinions haven't really changed at all.

~ Also interesting in music news, Justin Bieber is engaged to model Hailey Baldwin, which I only found out this morning on his Instagram. I wasn't really expecting it like how I wasn't expecting Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson. But I'm happy for them and hopefully things for work out unlike G-Eazy and Halsey (too soon?).
