Ed Sheeran (6) – Week Of March 18, 2017

Hey guys! I am now on Spring Break! The reason for this being posted today as opposed to sometime over the weekend is just pure laziness. So I really don't have a good reason for this week. But at least it's out relatively early in comparison to the previous two weeks. This week really wasn't anything special. We got rid of a good song and a bad song and replaced them with a good song and a bad song. So let's get into it. Before we get to this week's Fresh 45, here are the songs we're saying goodbye to this week.

New Entrants
~ We'll start with the (much) less interesting song, which is Believer by Imagine Dragons. Ideally, I was kind of hoping for something similar to Night Visions where we had It's Time, Radioactive, and Demons. Despite these songs being overplayed, they are still top-notch songs. They seem to be (once again) trying something new with their music and unfortunately it just does not work. Believer consists of a ton of yelling in the chorus that just doesn't grab my attention. It's actually pretty annoying. I get that they're experimenting new sounds and trying to be a little more rock, which is fine. But this song just does not set a good example. Like I said, a lot of yelling is going on. The production is a little weird, and not the good kind of weird. Overall, I hope this song doesn't last long. But honestly, I can't picture a song like this staying here for that long. Hopefully I'm right.

~ Next we have our favorite Brendon Urie! L.A. Devotee is easily one of the most "pop" songs on the Death Of A Bachelor album. It's really fast and it's really catchy. I really like the instrumentation and the production. Brendon Urie's vocals are on point from beginning to end. It's not the best song on the album, but it is definitely up there. I really don't have much else to say about this song other than the fact that it's very enjoyable and I'm sure it'll do well.

Hit-Bound
~ Here is the Hit-Bound list:

  • Snakehips/MØ – Don't Leave
  • MAX/Gnash – Lights Down Low
  • Calvin Harris/Frank Ocean/Migos – Slide
  • Lorde – Green Light
  • The Chainsmokers/Coldplay – Something Just Like This
  • Ocean Park Standoff – Good News
  • Little Mix – Touch
  • Flo Rida/99 Percent – Cake
  • Clean Bandit/Sean Paul/Anne-Marie – Rockabye
  • The Vamps/Matoma – All Night
  • Ariana Grande/Future – Everyday
  • Coin – Talk Too Much
  • One Ok Rock – American Girls
  • Jason Derulo/Nicki Minaj/Ty Dolla $ign – Swalla

~ I'm still very fascinated by the fact that Cake is actually on here.

Top 5 Hit-Bound Picks
1. The Chainsmokers/Coldplay – Something Just Like This
2. The Vamps/Matoma – All Night
3. Clean Bandit/Sean Paul/Anne-Marie – Rockabye
4. Little Mix – Touch
5. MAX/Gnash – Lights Down Low

L.A. Blurbotee
~ We're kind of at that point now where if Shape Of You continues to hold at #1, it'll get pretty damn annoying. So it'd be nice if it could leave that spot pretty soon. We really don't need another song reaching ten weeks at the top.

~ Maroon 5 – Cold took a relatively unexpected leap to #3 this week. Because it's Maroon 5, it's pretty much set to hit #1 at some point in the near future. Since we still have Shape Of You at the top, I think the sooner the better.

~ This week we got yet another massive jump from James Arthur – Say You Won't Let Go rising all the way to #11. I still like this song, so I really don't have a problem with this. There are certainly some worse songs on this countdown.

~ Ed Sheeran – Castle On The Hill also took a big jump up into the Top 15. While it's definitely a good song, I can't really see it becoming the massive hit that Shape Of You is right now. That said, I really don't know how long it'll stay. But I am definitely enjoying it right now.

~ Out of nowhere Fitz & The Tantrums – HandClap dropped out of the Top 10 this week. I can't say I'm that happy about that. I mean, I am surprised it even got into the Top 10 at all. But I really don't think it stayed there long enough.

~ The Weeknd/Daft Punk – I Feel It Coming continues to drop for some unknown reason. This song should be in the Top 10 right now. Also, I did see the music video for this song and it is quite interesting. But I'm hoping that this song can jump into the Top 10 at some point soon.

~ Linkin Park/Kiiara – Heavy took a random drop all the way back down to #34. I guess anything Kiiara does just can't be a hit. Even Linkin Park, who hit #10 in 2013 with A Light That Never Comes, couldn't save this song from flopping. But somehow, this was not the Biggest DROP!!!... of the Week.

~ The actual biggest drop came from Bebe Rexha – I Got You. This drop was pretty uncalled for and unnecessary if I do say so myself. Of course anything Bebe Rexha does solo can't be as big a hit as when she does collabs. Oh well.

~ The Hit 45 Chart for this week is currently being worked on and will be posted as soon as possible.

  1. Wait, your on spring break now? I don't get a real spring break until Easter, and no the snow storm last week that caused us to have FOUR days of no school doesn't count.

    1. Yeah it's kind of early for spring break. But I think the reason we have it now is so that it would be right after third quarter ended, kinda like how winter break was right after second quarter ended.

    2. Well I don't have one until Easter, which is saying something. And because of the number of snow days my area has had, they are thinking of taking away a few days of Easter break, so that graduation takes place on June 9th.

  7. Answers to the COAEP guess-the-song I did last week:

    1. 21 Savage/Metro Boomin - No Heart. The trivia answer was Metro Boomin. Graham got this right.
    2. A$AP Mob/A$AP Rocky/Various Artists - Telephone Calls. The bonus trivia was one week, because A$AP Mob's #1 song was Crazy Brazy.
    3. Ty Dolla $ign/Travi$ Scott - 3 Wayz. The trivia answer is four, because that #1 song was Key To The Streets (Remix).

Now here's a WC guess the song:
    - I was in red for Adrian on the year-end chart it was on, but then was in blue sometime after that.
    - I was in the bottom 10 of the countdown the week that the #18 song of my year debuted.
    - I am mainly by one artist, but a second is sometimes typed with it.

  18. So, in case any of you got stuck in the train of being jaded by Drake when More Life dropped last week, we also had two other albums by notable named: So Good by Zara Larsson, and Climate Change by Pitbull. The former does have her two former songs that most of us know (Never Forget You and Lush Life), and the title track which was on the YouTube15, and even a song with Clean Bandit. Spectrum Pulse reviewed the album here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gL-TQO7eTs

The latter, on the other hand... Let's just say some of you might find it to be So Bad It's Good. Matter of fact, to me that's kinda what sums up Pitbull in general for me (except Time Of Our Lives and Fireball, both of which I can unashamedly call solid). Twitter user T3chJ3t went on a pretty funny tweet spree while listening to it, as he does for most albums he reviews.

Oh yeah, there was also Rather You Than Me by Rick Ross.

  51. #1 Recommendation for Hits 1 and for everyone:

    Baby, are you down? [x5]
    Down, down
Even if the sky is fallin' down, down, down (oh)

    You ought to know
Tonight is the night to let it go
Put on a show (show, show)
I wanna see how you lose control

So leave it behind 'cause we have a night to get away (away, away)
So come on and fly with me as we make our great escape (escape, escape)

    [Chorus:]
    So, baby, don't worry
    You are my only
    You won't be lonely
Even if the sky is falling down
    You'll be my only
    No need to worry
    Baby, are you down? [x5]
    Down, down
    Baby, are you down? [x5]
    Down, down
Even if the sky is falling down

    Just let it be
Come on and bring your body next to me
    I'll take you away (ay)
Turn this place into our private getaway

So leave it behind 'cause we have a night to get away (away, away)
So come on and fly with me as we make our great escape
So why don't we run away

    [Chorus]

    [Lil Wayne:]
Down like she's suppose to be
She gets down low for me
    Down like her temperature
'Cause to me she's zero degrees
    She's cold, over freeze
I got that girl from overseas
    Now she's my Miss America
Now can I be her soldier, please?
I'm fighting for this girl on the battlefield of love
Got me look like baby Cupid
    Sending arrows from above
Don't you ever leave the side of me
    And definitely, not probably
And honestly I'm down like that economy (Yeah)

    [Chorus:]
    So, baby, don't worry
    You are my only
    You won't be lonely
Even if the sky is falling down
    You'll be my only (oh)
    No need to worry (oh)
Baby, are you down [x5] (oh, the sky is falling down)
    Down, down (oh, down)
    Baby, are you down [x5]
Down, down (oh, down) (the sky is falling down)
Even if the sky is falling down
Oh, oh, the sky is falling down

I think Shape Of You may have reached a peak in airplay.

Also, I expect That's What I Like to become the 2nd most heard song on radio soon, because it had a massive jump audience and spins, while LOTB and IDWLF has been losing airplay.

Why is it I keep expecting Green Light to jump 3 spots, because a few songs above it seem weaker on airplay but it doesn't happen? Also, why doesn't it have rhythmic pop format?

Even if Water Under The Bridge leaves soon on the Hot 100, I think it can hit the top 10 here on airplay.

I wouldn't be surprised if Fake Love had a sudden resurgence on radio due to the release of the album in a couple days.

  69. So, trivia: for any of you who may remember 679 by Fetty Wap, Heathens is the 679 of 2016-17.
    - They both debuted very early in the summer of both years.
    - They both landed on #21 on their first YE list. 679 with 20 weeks, and Heathens with 21, no less.
    - 679 was #55 on 2016's YE, and according to Pulse predictions, Heathens is projected for the Top 55 of 2017's.
    - They were both forced off the charts as a result of album bombs (The Life of Pablo last year, and More Life here).

Just some trivia, kinda clever coincidences.

  74. Hey guys. Since DogstarRadio is still down, I'll just give you a brief rundown of what's going on with the spins on Hits 1 based on what I heard on the radio today:

Bad news for Adrian, but good news for most of us (Me, Scott, Miles): I heard That's What I Like every hour which means it's likely gonna be in the Top 5.

Hits 1 aired the Ear Poppin' Music! snippet for Ariana Grande/Future - Everyday which means it's likely gonna debut this weekend.

Other than just That's What I Like, here are the other songs I heard as Most Wutchuwanted today:
    - Mercy
    - Bad Things
    - Castle On The Hill
    - and, of course, Shape Of You

    1. Huh. Maybe I was wrong about Everyday. Even if it debuts though, I highly think it'll leave in the next two months.

    2. Wait really, YYYYYESSSSASSSS! Then I'm not leaving.

  75. I also didn't catch that throwback pick until right now. Do like that one, while Maroon 5 were more proficient and respectable than they are nowadays. Arguably my favorite song of theirs.

    1. Also one of the best #1's of the 2000s. Not as good as We Belong Together, Independent Woman Part 1, Lose Yourself, Yeah!, Smooth or I Gotta Feeling, but still good nonetheless.

    1. They will not go out of business because of something that small. Anyone with a basic knowledge of how businesses and companies run knows that something as small as the number of exits per week will have VERY little to no effect. You my friend are alone with that idea.

The fact that you're done with Hits 1 because of the number of exits per week is also kind of dumb. But I guess it's your opinion.

    2. I don't think you should stop commenting anymore because of that. Sure, it's activity. We all love activity but I don't want to overreact about it.

    3. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^This.

Your seriously going to quit just because of something so stupid like the number of exits? No one else gives a fuck about something like that! People only care about the songs themselves. Take me reviewing the Hot 100, I'm not going to stop just because of Drake's huge uproar or a song holding at #1 longer than One Sweet Day because I know resistance is futile.

    4. It's definitely the quality of the songs that I care about most. And right now for me, music sucks but I'm still blogging. So leaving over such a little thing like exits is overreacting. I mean I'd rather activity than no activity as well, but quality is more important.

    5. I'm quitting because there's not enough activity on the countdown. I will still listen to the radio, but not leave.

    1. I consider the mixtape with Future as Part 2. Views is 3, and More Life is 4. If You're Reading This It's Too Late is part 1, and yes I know it was a mixtape.

    2. Well, both Views and More Life were insanely long, while the two 2015 releases weren't quite as much (although they did span two charts worth of debuts).

  82. I hope that this song can pull off a Hymn for the Weekend and stay on the countdown.
