Twenty One Pilots (1) – Week Of October 22, 2016

For those who do not look at this blog during the week, I did finally post my 800K pageview special. The other specials will get here as soon as possible. Just know that I'm working on them. It may not be here for another month, but I'm gonna try to have the 1M special out by the end of the year. That's kind of my goal at the moment. We'll see if I can accomplish that. New Entrants
~ Kicking off the entrants with Runaground – Chase You Down. I have to say, I am really liking this song. I love the beat and the vocals are so on point. This is a great example of a really good underrated songs. Sure, I hear it every now and then on Venus, but I really don't hear it anywhere else. This is one of the things I like about Hits 1 because they expose us to some underrated music like this song that we may not have heard before and probably won't hear elsewhere. Hopefully this song can last a decent amount of time.

~ If you're like me and you just wanna jump out of the car every time Cheap Thrills comes on at this point, you'll be happy to see that Sia has a new single now, which will hopefully take over for Cheap Thrills in the near future. This one is called The Greatest. I definitely think this song is a pretty good follow-up. It has a pretty solid beat and I like the vibe. Sia really does have a great voice and I like the lyrical content as well. I think Kendrick Lamar's verse flows pretty smoothly. Overall, I'm definitely enjoying this song. I don't even need to hope for success with this song. I just hope it doesn't become the next Cheap Thrills. But we'll just have to wait and see.

~ Alessia Cara has kind of been one of those artists who hasn't really released anything too memorable. Wild Things flopped and Here just got really annoying at some point. This week, she returns with Scars To Your Beautiful. It's one of those songs where the lyrical content can easily make me love the song. It is a beautiful song. Just beautiful. It's definitely my favorite song from Alessia Cara and very possibly my favorite debut this week. Her voice fits in this song so nicely and when she hits that high note right before the last chorus, it gives me chills. This song is just perfection and I never thought I'd say that about Alessia Cara's music after her first two singles. This song deserves success without a doubt and thankfully, the high debut at #17 tells me that it might get what it deserves.

~ Finally, we have the return of Maroon 5. As far as their last album went, I very much enjoyed Maps and AnimalsSugar was a huge disappointment and was really annoying, and This Summer's Gonna Hurt... I liked in more of a guilty pleasure kind of way. Their new single, Don't Wanna Know is definitely a different sound for them. It's a lot more calm. It's not one of those raging loud pop songs that can give people headaches. I actually did not like this song at first listen because I thought it was pretty boring. But now I've kind of come around to it. For those like me who have always been Maroon 5 fans, it does take a little time for this song to sink in just because it's so different. But now it's definitely a song I can listen to and enjoy every now and then. However, there is no way in hell this will survive radio overplay. But because it's Maroon 5, it's pretty set to be overplayed. So brace yourselves, everyone.

Hit-Bound
~ Here is the Hit-Bound list:

  • John Legend – Love Me Now (DEBUT)
  • Gavin DeGraw – She Sets The City On Fire (DEBUT)
  • Pitbull/Flo Rida/LunchMoney Lewis – Greenlight
  • Rihanna – Love On The Brain (DEBUT)
  • Jon Bellion – All Time Low
  • Fifth Harmony – That's My Girl (DEBUT)
  • Shawn Mendes – Mercy
  • Magic! – Red Dress
  • Mike Posner – Be As You Are
  • DNCE – Body Moves
  • Ariana Grande/Nicki Minaj – Side To Side
  • Ellie Goulding – Still Falling For You
  • Bastille – Good Grief
  • Jason Derulo – Kiss The Sky

~ After All In My Head flopped, Fifth Harmony return with That's My Girl. First off, I can really do without the weird fart-sounding horns in the verses. Those get pretty annoying at some point. But I love that chorus. It is pretty loud, but it's just so much fun! That's all I got for this song right now.

~ Gavin DeGraw has definitely some really good singles in the past. She Sets The City On Fire isn't exactly anything amazing. I've heard it a lot on The Pulse so I am pretty familiar with this song. It's good, but nothing to make it really stand out. But it's nice to see some more adult contemporary music hitting Top 40 radio.

~ I can't really say I'm enjoying John Legend – Love Me Now. I just don't really find it too interesting and I don't like the vocal work on this one. All Of Me from 2014 is definitely hard to top.

~ Of course Rihanna has to release the trashiest of songs from Anti as singles. And the good single, Kiss It Better, is the one that flopped because of the boring Needed Me. I'm having a pretty hard time at the moment picking which single is worse between Work and Love On The Brain. I'll talk more about Love On The Brain if it debuts. But let's just say that if I prefer listening to Magic! – Red Dress, there's a problem.

Top 5 Hit-Bound Picks
1. Jon Bellion – All Time Low
2. Ellie Goulding – Still Falling For You
3. Ariana Grande/Nicki Minaj – Side To Side
4. Shawn Mendes – Mercy
5. DNCE – Body Moves

Blurb You Down
~ The re-entries into the Top 5 from Daya – Sit Still, Look Pretty and Sia/Sean Paul – Cheap Thrills were both extremely unnecessary. Way to easily demote these songs to worse rankings in my book.

~ The jump back into the Top 10 from Twenty One Pilots – Ride was unnecessary as well. I never even liked this song, so I'm sure you can imagine how infuriating it is at this point. Now it's gonna be the new Stressed Out where it just doesn't drop for another couple months or so.

~ But thank the lord Calvin Harris/Rihanna – This Is What You Came For took a drop out of the Top 10. Now let's PLEASE let it drop!!! Rihanna is just getting worse and worse and worse as time goes on.

~ DJ Snake/Justin Bieber – Let Me Love You easily recovered from a few weeks of doing absolutely nothing. Now it's in the Top 10. That's pretty impressive. Of course with that, Cold Water dropped out of the Top 10, which is ultimately fine with me as I much prefer Let Me Love You over Cold Water.

~ Kenny Chesney/P!nk – Setting The World On Fire took quite the jump up to #13 this week, which frankly I'm more confused about than I am happy. But I'll take it.

~ It is indeed very pleasing to see Lady Gaga – Perfect Illusion have the Biggest DROP!!!... of the Week. It is absolutely nowhere near her best work, or even her good work. This song is just so bad. And honestly her fans are acting the same way Twenty One Pilots fans act when someone says they don't like the song. Frankly, I think it's obnoxious how ignorant they are and how unaccepting they are towards one's opinion.

~ Andy Grammer – Fresh Eyes thankfully has been consistently dropping. Hopefully that means we can see it depart the countdown very soon. This song is extremely boring and I'd like for it to not stay that much longer.

~ X Ambassadors – Unsteady still in the Top 10 is going to get really aggravating at some point. This song has been here for a very long time and it's just now spending time in the Top 10??? Oh well. I guess it could be worse.

~ It's really nice to Twenty One Pilots – Heathens at #1. I know I say this quite often, but I really do believe that this is quite a standout track for the band. Hopefully we get more songs like this in the future because this is what's grabbing my attention.

~ As far as our exits go, it's very disappointing to see Spirits and The Little Things go so soon, with the latter having spent only 3 weeks on the countdown. But Victorious and Cake By The Ocean have been overdue for quite a while. Victorious was reasonably to having lasted a full year. It would've lasted a year had it not been for the six or so week gap from when it first left to when it re-entered. And I'm sure we were pretty damn close to Cake By The Ocean spending one year as it was on Hit-Bound this week one year ago.

~ The Hit 45 Chart is currently being worked on, but is certainly closer to being done than it was last week. So I can guarantee it will be out before Wednesday unlike last week's chart.

  1. Please don't tell me I'm gonna be the lonely one to hate Don't Wanna Know.

As I said release Desperado, easily one of the best songs off of Anti.

  2. Anyone else get a Robin Schulz-y feel from Chase You Down?

On the note of your Hits 1 recommendation (which was the same as mine today, haha), I know you initially had it as mediocre under NSOT, so I take it you grew into it?

And Miles, for the record, Don't Wanna Know is definitely closer to red for me than it is green. It'll be there before long, trust me.

For that matter, I'm with him on #TeamStressedOutMustLastAYear :P

    1. I can definitely feel some Robin Schulz in Chase You Down. If I didn't know who it was by, I probably would've guessed Schulz.

And yes, I definitely grew into Cool Girl.

    2. ^ Basically my thoughts, although I decided to be nice and put it in blue for the time being. You know, Spectrum Pulse said that the backing vocals sound like they're from Chris Brown himself, which...doesn't sound like that to me but I can see why.

  9. Good job on your post as always!

Also good to see I'm not the only one who likes That's My Girl Hopefully (for me), it can make it's debut within the next few weeks and at least have a good tenure, unlike All In My Head (Flex).

I figured you'd have Cheap Thrills in red at some point. I'm kinda on board with this (though for me, it's in turquoise). Oh, and speaking of red, it won't be too much longer until Unsteady becomes the next Cheap Thrills (unless it leaves the Top 20).

It seems to you that 2016 really hasn't been a good year for music (except for Maroon 5, P!nk, and even Justin Timberlake).

    1. And Coldplay, as well. They have what will surely be his #1.

      Delete
    2. Yep, I forgot about Coldplay. Both Hymn For the Weekend & Adventure Of a Lifetime will for sure be in his Top 45 Year-End list.

Speaking of Hymn For the Weekend, I've been enjoying that song for a little while now, especially the original version. And I do agree with Adrian, it's really really good. Beyonce's vocals are outstanding, and the piano work is great! Glad to see his favorite song doing well on Hits 1.

      Delete
    3. But as for the elephant in the room...yes. I do think both versions have their appeal, but I get the feeling that Hits 1 picked up the Seeb remix because they find it livelier and more would possibly rather want that when they're driving in their car as opposed to a slower song. But that's just me of course. I know that Lance Warren said he preferred the Seeb remix as well...

      Delete
    4. You can say the same for I Hate U, I Love U. I think they picked up the Deepend remix for the same reason they chose the Seeb remix.

And speaking of Seeb, the only one that turned out well was Mike Posner - I Took a Pill in Ibiza.

    1. Then maybe the Weekend Countdown, AT40 and the Hot 100 just isn't for you, or any chart involving something that isn't remotely rap/hip-hop.

      Delete
    2. The Weekend Countdown doesn't interest me too much anymore because of the utter lack of rap.

The AT40 is still not good, but better than the Weekend Countdown because it includes pretty much every hit song on the radio, even 1 or 2 rap songs. I hope Broccoli can debut there soon because it's #33 on the radio at the moment.

I actually like the Billboard Hot 100 because it has a lot of rap and when a new rap song debuts on there, I'll most likely start to enjoy it and it'll debut on COAEP some time after.

My favorite music chart at the moment, however, is Billboard's Hot R&B and Hip Hop songs chart that I review every week on my blog. It has a lot of fresh, new rap, like the Hot 100, that I can listen to in my free time.

  12. My Top 5 Picks:
    1) Starving- Hailee Steinfeld & Grey ft. Zedd
    2) 24K Magic- Bruno Mars
    3) I Hate U I Love U- Gnash ft. Olivia O'Brien
    4) The Greatest- Sia ft. Kendrick Lamar
    5) Let Me Love You- DJ Snake ft. Justin Bieber

Can I just say how amazing Hit Bound is right now! I absolutely love:
    All Time Low- Jon Bellion
    That's My Girl- Fifth Harmony
    Mercy- Shawn Mendes
Be As You Are- Mike Posner
    Body Moves- DNCE
Side To Side- Ariana Grande ft. Nicki Minaj

    And I do enjoy:
    Love Me Now- John Legend
She Sets The City On Fire- Gavin DeGraw
Greenlight- Pitbull ft. Flo Rida & Lunchmoney Lewis
Still Falling For You- Ellie Goulding
    Good Grief- Bastille

    I do not like:
    Red Dress- Magic!
    Kiss The Sky- Jason Derulo

    I HATE:
    Love On The Brain- Rihanna

    1. *sees your #2 favorite pick* Thank you for being able to appreciate this epic throwback banger. You are officially cool to me.

As for the debuts today, I could possibly grow into Love Me Now or She Sets The City On Fire, but the other two I doubt will happen. As I said before, I can safely say that Hits 1 doesn't like Be As You Are, and I also said that about Greenlight, but that one is quickly gaining in sales so it might debut soon.

      Delete
    2. Why is everyone hating on Love on the Brain???
      -.

      Delete
    3. Because its boring, slow, minimalist piano ballad that Rihanna should never do. She is such a lack of personality in this song.

      Delete
    4. Probably because a slow, acoustic ballad is not what Rihanna is best with.

    5. My thoughts exactly. Songs like What's My Name?, Only Girl In The World, We Found Love, Where Have You Been, and Diamonds are so much better.

      Delete
    6. And on that note, I thought Work was cool at first, but then I slowly realized that the lyrics were underwritten and repetitive to the point where it got boring. Good thing it flopped on Hits 1, though.

He told us we can stay there to make music at his house. Sevn pulled the “Work” beat, but nobody knew where to take it. As soon as he pulled that up, I played the keys on it. I honestly didn’t even think the beat was done. But it’s big now." - One of the writers of Work, as listed on Genius.

    1. I know that there's a remix of the song, so that probably has a higher chance of making it to Hits 1 than the original. It's also longer, probably like 3 minutes long instead of 45 SECONDS long.

  16. Forgot to mention this but earlier today I got the Fall Out Boy album Icon: The Best Of Fall Out Boy. It includes tracks like Dance, Dance, Thnks Fr Th Mmrs, A Little Less Sixteen Candles, A Little More "Touch Me", This Ain't A Scene, Its An Arms Race, and of course Sugar, We're Going Down. And this was released in 2012, before the release of the biggest song of 2013 on the Weekend Countdown.

  17. Here's a bit of a snippet from my blog.

"Okay so I may have grown in I Hate U I Love U. Not only just the remix that Hits 1 supposedly plays, but the original as well. And its all thanks to AMV's about people who hate each other and making it into a famous couple in a fandom. (Here's a game for ya's in the comments, try to guess which fandom I'm talking about and you get a shoutout in my Billboard post next week)"

    5. WAMB10: Yes, why do you have Wiggle in green and not red, you hypocrite?

      Delete
    6. . has Wiggle and Anaconda in green.

      Delete
    7. I don't care about ., I'm talking about you. You have Anaconda in orange because of the lyrics, yet you put Wiggle in green, despite its' suggestive lyrics, thus making you a fucking hypocrite! You say you hate songs that involve sex, yet you have songs like Wiggle, Worth It, and Work From Home as songs you like, despite knowing what the lyrics are. Just admit it WAMB10 you're not the perfect girl everyone thinks you are, you are nothing more than an annoying hypocrite.

      Delete
    8. Anaconda = my least favorite song of all time.

      Delete
    9. And I love some songs with sex.

      Delete
    10. Anaconda is so annoying, the tune, and it says look at her butt. The music video is inappropriate, this somg is way more sexual that Wiggle, Work From Home, and Worth It.

      Delete
    11. Bullshit, explain why you like/hate these songs, I fucking dare you.

      Anaconda
      Work From Home
      Get Ugly
      Worth It
      Wiggle
      Work
      Talk Dirty

And when I say explain, I don't want 1 fucking sentence, I want a full explanation, almost like a paragraph, because I feel like only a handful of us can actually explain why we hate or like a certain song.

      Delete
    12. Although I don't like the fact of sex and people singing about it, I don't care for songs that mention it. For example, the song with the most weeks at #1 on COAEP (You guys know what that is by now) has very sexy lyrics, but again, I don't care. As for Anaconda, I love it in a guilty pleasure sort of way. The lyrics of Work From Home and Wiggle are both stupid as well, but they're both catchy songs I can jam out to.

      Delete
    13. Miles, I don't want to type 7 paragraphs.

      Delete
    14. But I do really hate Anaconda and Get Ugly, with the latter being my least favorite song of 2016.

  26. Here is the best song from each artist currently on COAEP in my opinion (I'll exclude artists who the only song I know from them is on the chart):

Yo Gotti- Tie between Wait For It and Down In The DM
DJ Mustard- Tie between Post To Be and Don't Hurt Me
Quavo- This is tough...I'll go with Look At My Dab.
    YG- Don't Tell 'Em
    Jeremih- Don't Tell 'Em
    Nicki Minaj- Super Bass
    Tyga- In My Room
    Yellow Claw- In My Room
Ty Dolla $ign- This is also very tough, but I'll say either In My Room, Blase, or Work From Home.
Trey Songz- Tie between Push It On Me and Bae (or Pu$$y, whatever you want to call it)
Lil Uzi Vert- Tie between Pull Up and Money Longer
Young Thug- Pick Up The Phone
    Kodak Black- Lockjaw
    Gucci Mane- Champions
    2 Chainz- Talk Dirty
    Lil Wayne- No Love
    Future- I can't pick one!
DJ Khaled- All I Do Is Win
    Chris Brown- Post To Be
Rick Ross- All I Do Is Win
Drake- Tie between Controlla and For Free
    Wiz Khalifa- See You Again
    Travi$ Scott- Antidote
The Weeknd- Can't Feel My Face
    Daft Punk- Get Lucky

Let me know if I missed anyone.

  27. Response to Adrian's 800k QnA Post Question 23: I understand how you can't get into it. It is very confusing with type matchups. And here I'm trying an X Wedlocke....

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Ugh... In 2014 and 2015, Nuzlockes and Wedlockes were my thing, but after putting so much time and effort into one of them but having it end on a disastrously awful note, it almost destroyed my interest in the franchise altogether. :'''(

I am trying to get back into the franchise in time for Sun and Moon, so I've been doing a Nuzlocke on Alpha Sapphire in the meantime. Almost time for the league on that note.

And speaking of type matchups, Sun and Moon will have indications of if a move's effectiveness against the opponent :P

  42. So with The Little Things having left after three weeks, I think it joins the three week club with The Fix, El Taxi and Rise, correct?

And does that make for the most Hysterically Short Tenure of this year so far? Because I don't think there are any songs that lasted less than three weeks to this point.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Correction: The Fix lasted four weeks. Easy to forget, thought it was three.

Also, all three of them (and that song) left the countdown while in the 20s.

      Delete
    2. Hold Me Up and Sound of Your Heart also lasted three weeks, if I'm correct.

      Delete
    3. From the records page on my blog:

      Shortest chart run
      1. Conrad Sewell - Hold Me Up (3 weeks, 2/13)
      1. Pitbull/Osmani Garcia/Lil Jon - El Taxi (3 weeks, 3/26)
      1. Shawn Hook - Sound of Your Heart (3 weeks, 4/23)
      1. Katy Perry - Rise (3 weeks, 9/24)
      1. Big Gigantic/Angela McCluskey - The Little Things (3 weeks, 10/22)

Those were all the songs that spent 3 weeks on this countdown this year - they all tie for shortest tenure this year.

  45. This Week in Billboard Chart History: In 1990, Janet Jackson's 'Black Cat' Crept to No. 1

Jackson prepped for Halloween with her aptly titled leader. Plus, remembering feats by Britney Spears, Whitney Houston & Ludacris.

    Oct. 24, 2009
Britney Spears notched her third Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 with the aptly titled "3." Her previous leader? Let's continue ...

    Oct. 25, 2008
Britney Spears scored her second Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 – and first in almost 10 years – as the scathing "Womanizer" danced to the summit.

    Oct. 26, 1985
Whitney Houston ruled the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time, as "Saving All My Love for You" rose 2-1. The ballad became her first of 11 No. 1s, as well as her first of seven in a row, the longest leading streak in the chart's history.

    Oct. 27, 1990
Well-timed around Halloween, Janet Jackson's "Black Cat" leapt to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

    Oct. 28, 2006
Ten years ago today: Ludacris shook his way to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 with "Money Maker," featuring Pharrell.

    Oct. 29, 1994
Another song that fittingly hit No. 1 around Halloween: 20 years ago today, the Cranberries began a six-week reign on Alternative Songs with one of their signature hits, "Zombie."

    Oct. 30, 1982
Australia's Men at Work marked a milestone in their American invasion, as their debut single, "Who Can It Be Now?" rose 2-1 on the Billboard Hot 100. They'd follow with their next No. 1, "Down Under," in early 1983. In recent years, the band's frontman Colin Hay has toured solo regularly, calling playing shows "nourishment for the soul."
