The Chainsmokers (4) – Week Of October 29, 2016

Welcome everyone to the special spooky edition of the Hits 1 Halloweekend Countdown. This week we have Niall Horan guest hosting. I personally thought this week was a relatively good week. We got rid of one huge piece of trash, replaced it with a really good entrant, and the Top 5 is actually looking really good at the moment. Before we get to this week's Fresh 45, here are the songs we're saying goodbye to this week.

Biggest DROP!!!... Of The Week: Calvin Harris/Rihanna – This Is What You Came For (–12)

Biggest Jump Of The Week: Major Lazer/Justin Bieber/MØ – Cold Water (+13)

New Entrants
~ Our lone new entrant this week comes from Ariana Grande bringing her third song on the countdown. I've been really enjoying Side To Side lately. That chorus has been in my head. I think the song is really fun and catchy. Ariana's voice sounds really good. I love the production. I love Nicki Minaj's verse. She definitely helps this song. While I thought the AMA's performance of this song was boring, the song itself is actually really fun. I definitely think this is a win for Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj.

Hit-Bound
~ Here is the Hit-Bound list:

  • Jason Derulo – Kiss The Sky
  • Shawn Mendes – Mercy
  • Fifth Harmony – That's My Girl
  • The Summer Set – The Night Is Young (DEBUT)
  • Pitbull/Flo Rida/LunchMoney Lewis – Greenlight
  • Mike Posner – Be As You Are
  • Gavin DeGraw – She Sets The City On Fire
  • Ellie Goulding – Still Falling For You
  • John Legend – Love Me Now
  • DNCE – Body Moves
  • Jon Bellion – All Time Low
  • Rihanna – Love On The Brain
  • Bastille – Good Grief
  • Magic! – Red Dress

~ While I definitely think The Night Is Young is better than Figure Me Out, I still don't think it's that amazing. I just can't get on board with this guy's voice. It sounded really good on what I think was their best song, Boomerang. But ever since then, it's gotten kind of annoying. But I like everything else about this song.

Top 5 Hit-Bound Picks
1. Jon Bellion – All Time Low
2. Ellie Goulding – Still Falling For You
3. DNCE – Body Moves
4. Gavin DeGraw – She Sets The City On Fire
5. Shawn Mendes – Mercy

Blurb To Blurb
~ I did not see the jump into the Top 3 from Major Lazer/Justin Bieber/MØ – Cold Water coming. But I'll accept it. It's definitely better than what we've had here in the Top 5 previously (i.e. Sit Still, Look Pretty, Cheap Thrills, etc.).

~ Also in the Top 5, we have my favorite song on the countdown in the form of Coldplay – Hymn For The Weekend! I'm so glad we managed to get this song into the Top 5! I have never seen a Coldplay song do so well on this countdown and I'm very happy that I got to witness it with Hymn For The Weekend. As much as I love all of their music, Hymn For The Weekend definitely has a spot in my Top 10 favorite songs from them. Coldplay is just amazing. I absolutely love them. It'd be a miracle if this hit #1, which I HIGHLY doubt it will. But it'd be nice. But I'm happy that it reached the Top 5.

~ Why is the ugly Gold by Kiiara jumping??? I was listening to this song yesterday on Hits 1 and it was so boring and frankly, very annoying. I personally don't see what people like about this song. But to each their own, I guess.

~ Words cannot even describe how annoyed I get when I hear the beginning line, "Baby, this is what you came for." Thank god it dropped this week. That jump to #4 two weeks ago was pretty damn scary. Now we just need to get it out of the countdown.

~ I'm not very pleased to The Weeknd/Daft Punk – Starboy drop to #30. This song is really popular and really good. Why underrate The Weeknd's good songs??? Hits 1 already underrated The Hills big time despite it being very successful across the country. I'd like to not see Starboy follow that path.

~ Of course Runaground – Chase You Down has to drop on its second week. This is quality music right here being underrated. I want to see a song like this one be successful, so it's not always the same artists towards the top of the chart.

~ I'm glad Mike Posner – I Took A Pill In Ibiza is still here going strong. I definitely think it's one of the best songs of the year and at this point, I'll pretty much never get sick of it.

~ After the huge drop from Flume/Kai – Never Be Like You, I kind of started to get bored listening to the song. It's okay at the moment. But I will start to get tired of it at some point in the near future. It was mainly the beat that grabbed my attention at first and now that's starting to fade.

~ We have four really bad/old songs in the Bottom 5 that need to leave, like next week. Poor Demi Lovato – Body Say is being sandwiched between them. But seriously, it'd be amazing to see these four songs all leave in the same week, kind of like when Selena Gomez's two bad songs (Kill Em With Kindness and Hands To Myself) both left in the same week.

~ As far as the exit goes, I'm very glad No has finally left us and we can have a nice countdown without a trashy Meghan Trainor song. I thought No could be the start of something new for Meghan Trainor. Something better. But no, clearly not. Same trashiness as when All About That Bass was a thing. Gross.

~ The Hit 45 Chart is currently being worked on and will be out as soon as possible.

  1. Oh right, I almost forgot about the SeeB remix of HFTW jumping and Adrian gushing once again about Coldplay. Again, I see the appeal of the original, but I judge the Hits 1 based on what Hits 1 plays, not the original.

    1. As I said before, it does kind of make sense why they have the Seeb remix, because I believe they probably thought a faster, more dance-able song is what people would rather have playing in their car, as opposed to the slower original. Someone said the same thing about why I Hate U I Love U uses the Deepend Remix.

      Delete
    2. Yeah, but it weakens what the original was intended to do, not everything needs a remix and turned into a generic EDM monster. I believe the era of strong EDM in 2012-2014 has long past, and these remixes are not gonna bring them back. I don't like the SeeB remix, and I am not a fan of the Deepend Remix of I Hate U, I Love U, I am much more a fan of the original, plain and simple. If Hits 1 wants to play the remixes that's fine, but I'm not gonna grade them on the original, I'm grading them on what they play. And before anyone uses the ITAPII argument, everyone was playing that remix. And the remix was fine, but it did get old, especially for me.

  2. Fun piece of trivia for you (and WAMB10 mentioned this last page) - No both debuted and exited on a week that not only had one exit, but had a guest host. Meghan Meghans herself hosted the week that No debuted.

Also, no mention of the fact that the one year ago #1 was by the boy band that the guest host was a part of? :P

  7. So while watching the World Series, I just heard Greenlight in a 2017 World Baseball Classic commercial. If I'm not mistaken, the thing had that big sales increase after being used in a car commercial.

Is this song gonna be like Centuries or All I Do Is Win that gets spammed during sports coverage and the like?

  12. Nice post! And I think I know why Hits 1 is under rating Starboy.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Because it's R&B and it is one of those songs you will get bored of after 1 listen, like me!

      Delete
    2. There is nothing wrong with R&B, I hate it when people say its boring or terrible, when it is not.

      Delete
    3. You Will get Bored Of It

      Delete
    4. No I wont' because I've listened to R&B almost as much as I've listened to pop music for most of my life. You are just like ., you both don't like good R&B, which is supposed to have emotion. Not everything needs to be a fucking dance song, and you need to remember that.

      Delete
    5. It's because Starboy sounds like a rap song and is in Spotify's Rap Caviar. And I think we all know by now that Hits 1 hates rap.

      Delete
    6. Starboy is a dark R&B and that's what I like about it, its dark, bossy, and alluring. The production is amazing, thanks largely to Daft Punk ,the Weeknd is amazing as always, and the lyrics of wanting to kill the Weeknd's old persona, perhaps a sign that the Weeknd is trying to reinvent himself in preparation for the upcoming album.

      Delete
    7. oh right, it is r&b/RAP?
it debuts at a semi-high position, and doesn't make any sucsess, just like flo rida, you know, the one that sings Good Feeling and not crappy my house, which actully made #1
i was inlove with starboy when i first listened to it, but now it is boring,or maybe i just listen to adult stuff and electronica,

      Delete
    8. I had the same case with Starboy, I loved it at first (it almost debuted at #1 on #40Friday) and it just left this week. And I thought that no song peaking at #2 would spend less time on my chart than Cool Girl.

      Delete
    9. "or maybe i just listen to adult stuff and electronica," You mean Adult Contemporary, which is kinda like R&B? Just because it has no success on Hits 1 doesn't mean its unsuccessful anywhere else. Its currently #2 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart, just behind Closer, which calculates streaming, airplay, sales, and YouTube. Hell, I care more about the biggest songs in America than some second rate satellite radio station that "allegedly" has the 45 biggest songs in North America based on out votes and the Wutchuwant crew.

      Delete
    10. I think I'd consider it as R&B/Rap, similar to One Dance, which flopped here and had major success everywhere else.

      Delete
    11. Well yeah, but you have to think, Hits 1 is a POP station, where they mostly play POP music. That's another reason I don't tend to like Hits 1, they have a simple bias towards pop, and against other genres. That's why I gravitate and spend more time on the Billboard Hot 100 posts compared to the Hits 1 Weekend Countdown. It takes me 3 days at the most to post the Hot 100, but less than a day for the Weekend Countdown.

      Delete
    12. I agree with that, which is probably why Starboy is flopping here.

      Delete
    13. maybe i got sick of starboy after, maybe only 5 listens. It's a songthat i can get sick of,But the Hills is what i can't get sick of.
Miles washcalus at 12:13 Pm On October 30th 2016"which is kinda like r&b?" and by kinda you not at all, these songs never make it into the top 115 adult pop charts on billboard, and regular pop,Maybe hits 1 is NOT REGULAR POP.

And when it's time to pop they a no-show
Yeah, I'm pretty, but I'm loco

I ride for my guys, that's the bro code
Baby gave me head; that's a low blow
Damn, she make me weak when she deep throat
I need a rich bitch, not a cheap ho
They be on that hate shit, I peep though
My brother told me: "Fuck 'em, get that money, sis!"
You just keep on grindin' on your hungry shit
Ignore the hate, ignore the fake, ignore the funny shit
‘Cause if a n***a violate, we got a hunnit clips (grrrrrrrah!)
And we go zero to a hundred quick (ooouuu)

Yerr, Eli, why they testin' me?
Like I don't always keep the hammer next to me
Like I ain't got a hitter to the left of me
Like we ain't in these streets more than Sesame
If that's your chick, then why she textin' me?
Why she keep calling my phone speaking sexually?
Every time I'm out, why she stressin' me?
You call her Stephanie? I call her Headphanie (OOOUUU)
    I don't open doors for a whore
I just want the neck, nothin' more
Shawty, make it clap, make it applaud!
When you tired of your man, give me a call
Dyke bitches talking out they jaw
Next minute, calling for the law
This 9 will have 'em calling for the Lord
They ain't getting shmoney, so they bored
I could never lose, what you thought?
M.A got it on lock, man, of course

  35. Quick question, what year end list do you guys want me to review. 2010-2014, 2016 are you answers, if you choose 2016, it will be reviewed at the end of the year.

    1. I'd love to review 2012 whether before or after the end of 2016, we'll wait and see.

      Delete
    2. 2011, perhaps? That was the year known best for the proper beginning of Adele, and a bunch of other new trends as the club boom died down.

      Delete
    3. That's another year I'd love to review as well. I feel that if I reviewed 2010 though, I would not survive the club atrocities that lie ahead if I reviewed it. I already reviewed 2015, and I want to review the 2016 chart when it comes out by the end of the year.

  36. She's just a girl, and she's on fire
Hotter than a fantasy, longer like a highway
She's living in a world, and it's on fire
Feeling the catastrophe, but she knows she can fly away
Oh, she got both feet on the ground
    And she's burning it down
Oh, she got her head in the clouds
    And she's not backing down
    This girl is on fire
    This girl is on fire
    She's walking on fire
    This girl is on fire
Looks like a girl, but she's a flame
So bright, she can burn your eyes
    Better look the other way
You can try but you'll never forget her name
She's on top of the world
Hottest of the hottest girls say
Oh, we got our feet on the ground
    And we're burning it down
Oh, got our head in the clouds
    And we're not coming down
    This girl is on fire
    This girl is on fire
    She's walking on fire
    This girl is on fire
Everybody stands, as she goes by
Cause they can see the flame that's in her eyes
Watch her when she's lighting up the night
Nobody knows that she's a lonely girl
    And it's a lonely world
But she gon' let it burn, baby, burn, baby
    This girl is on fire
    This girl is on fire
    She's walking on fire
    This girl is on fire
    Oh, oh, oh,
She's just a girl, and she's on fire

  37. God that song sucks. Not the worst of 2013, but its not good at all. Alicia sounds terrible in the chorus, and the beat with her voice is completely off-key.

  44. This Week in Billboard Chart History: In 2001, Mary J. Blige's 'Family Affair' Topped the Hot 100

Having first appeared on the Hot 100 in 1992, Blige led at last. Plus, remembering feats by Shania Twain, The Beach Boys & Meat Loaf.

    Oct. 31, 1998
Shania Twain's ode to (or, perhaps, demand for) me-time, "Honey, I'm Home," became her seventh, and most recent, No. 1 on Hot Country Songs. She's set to receive the Icon Award at Billboard's Women in Music celebration, to be held Dec. 9 in New York City and air nationally on Lifetime Dec. 12.

    Nov. 1, 2014
Iggy Azalea made it three No. 1s on Billboard's Pop Songs airplay chart in her first three tries, as "Black Widow," featuring Rita Ora, spun its way to the top. It followed "Fancy," featuring Charli XCX, and Ariana Grande's "Problem," featuring Azalea.

    Nov. 2, 1996
Duncan Sheik's ode to oxygen deprivation made for a memorable debut. Twenty years ago today, "Barely Breathing" reached the top of the Adult Alternative Songs chart.

    Nov. 3, 2001
Nine years after her first appearance, Mary J. Blige celebrated her first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1, as "Family Affair" began a six-week command.

    Nov. 4, 1989
After leading earlier in the year with debut hit "The Look," Roxette returned to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 with "Listen to Your Heart." What was historically significant about the song? It was the first No. 1 available only as a cassette single, not on a 45-RPM vinyl single.

    Nov. 5, 1988
After having not led the Billboard Hot 100 since 1966 with "Good Vibrations," The Beach Boys returned to No. 1 with "Kokomo," from the soundtrack to the Tom Cruise hit Cocktail.

    Nov. 6, 1993
We still don't really know what "that" is, do we? No matter: on this date 23 years ago, Meat Loaf dug in for his first of five weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 with "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)."

    3. Why TF is Black Beatles just now in the top 20? I enjoyed that song a few MONTHS ago.

    4. Love Yourself is sure to be the #1 song of the year, but Closer is essentially certain to be Top 10 this year. It only had 15 weeks, but they were 15 absolutely monstrous weeks.

And I’m hoping that it’s all my fault
Yea, I’m hoping that it’s all my fault
Hey, let’s not be alone tonight
Hey, let’s not be alone tonight (You don’t have to be alone)

All good if you change your mind, you know where I stand
Look back and I say to you I lost all my friends
And I know you know it’s all your fault
Yeah, I know you know it’s all your fault
Hey, let’s not be alone tonight
Hey, let’s not be alone tonight (You don’t have to be alone)

    La la la la la
La la la la la (Yeah)
    La la la la la
La la la la la (Yeah)
And we might never feel the same
I’m just glad that you came
Am I right or is it all in my head?

Hey, let’s not be alone tonight (You don’t have to be alone)

  55. So, remember how The Chainsmokers said that they thought Perfect Illusion sucked, which Spyder Harrison mentioned before introducing that song on the countdown a few weeks ago? Well, this happened...

    http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/pop/7557863/mark-ronson-snaps-back-chainsmokers-over-lady-gaga-diss

Mark Ronson did not take that kindly. He thought they were up and in on Gaga again. But it turned out that The Chainsmokers were back in America, is all.

And on another Mark Ronson related note... Uptown Funk was sued by an 80's funk band named Collage. I had never heard of this band before then, but yeah, seeing as the song's popularity died out at the end of last year, this comes off as little more than a cash grab attempt. He'll be fine.
