Year-End Special: Billboard Hot 100 of 2016

Now the Billboard Hot 100 is much different in comparison to charts like the SiriusXM Hits 1 Weekend Countdown. This is mainly because Billboard actually includes all music including the trashy rap songs that only get popular from streaming services like SoundCloud and YouTube. Thankfully, those rap songs didn't take over their year-end list entirely. There are a few songs that seem quite random, but most of the rap songs here are the real big hits. But like I said, rap wasn't the main genre on this list thankfully. So right now, I'm going to review Billboard's Year-End Hot 100. Color-coding will work the way it usually does. The only difference is purple and orange. Typically they are used to note the best and worst songs on the chart, respectively. But for this list, purple will be for the Top 5 songs and orange will be Bottom 5 songs. So there will be five songs in purple and five songs in orange. There's just so much in this list to have only one of each. So why not five? That's the only real difference. So without further ado, here are the Top 100 songs of 2016 according to Billboard!

Justin Blurber
~ So Justin Bieber managed to snag not just the top spot, but the top TWO spots. Pretty impressive if you ask me. Especially since Love Yourself only lasted two weeks at #1 on the Hot 100. But Justin Bieber is really talented, so he without a doubt deserves this.

Drake/WizKid/Kyla – One Dance was definitely one of the most successful singles of the year spending ten weeks at #1 on the Hot 100. And even after all that, I'm still not sick of it. There's one thing about the song in particular that I still love as much as I did at first listen and that's the beat. The beat makes the song in my opinion.

~ Then we have the trashy Work by Rihanna and the song that is only in turquoise because I'm sick of it, Twenty One Pilots – Stressed Out. Immediately following after that is easily the worst song of the year, which I don't even want to get into for my sanity and yours. But I actually did see a performance of this song on Pitbull's New Year's Eve special, which pretty much just made the song worse.

~ Billboard ended up ranking Adele – Hello at the exact same spot as where I ranked it in my Top 45 of 2016. Frankly, I'm surprised it wasn't ranked higher. But I get the whole thing about how it was released late in 2015 and was a big hit end of 2015 going into 2016. But still, Justin Bieber – Sorry, which was released the same exact day as Hello, managed to get all the way up to #2. So it was possible for Hello to be higher.

~ The Chainsmokers/Halsey – Closer was obviously one of the biggest songs this year as it was the longest-running song at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. But it did hit #1 reasonably late in the year, so I'm not surprised that it's not any higher.

~ Rihanna – Needed Me was ranked a lot higher than I thought it would be. I never did give a full-on review of this song. So here's what I think. It's okay. There are pros and cons that pretty much balance out to make the song neither good nor bad. On one hand, I do not like the production at all and the lyrics seem pretty dumb. But on the other hand, I do like Rihanna's vocal performance and I take into consideration the fact that this song is a step up from the god awful Work. Personally, I thought Kiss It Better was the best single off Anti. Of course, the one single that was actually really good flopped pretty hard, which is as disappointing as Anti as a whole. Overall, while Needed Me is much better than Work, it's still not exactly good. It's listenable.

~ Once again, I find it just mind-boggling how This Is What You Came For is considered one of Calvin Harris' biggest songs when some of his less popular singles were MUCH better. Easily the worst song he has put out and the most generic drop I have ever heard.

~ With two Twenty One Pilots songs back-to-back, it doesn't surprise me that Ride is above Heathens. As much as I wanted it to be the other way around, I pretty much knew it would turn out this way. Heathens was definitely a new sound for these guys after songs like Ride and I am really enjoying their new sound. Heathens has pretty much already lasted on me longer than Stressed Out and Ride, which I never even liked. I may have a little bit of the unpopular opinion when it comes to these songs, but that's just how I feel.

~ I did not anticipate on Drake – Hotline Bling being ranked this high. I'll admit that it's actually not a bad song. It's stupid, but it's reasonably catchy. For some reason back when I disliked it, I never actually gave it a thumbs-down on my Today's Hits Radio station on Pandora. So it comes on every now and then and it did get a little better with more listens. It's nowhere near Drake's best. But he has had a lot more crappier stuff this past year.

~ Those of you that know me may be shocked to see a Justin Bieber song not in green (or purple). But What Do You Mean was just not his best song. It was not the best comeback. It just felt a little too simple. It's definitely not bad, but I know he can do better, and he did (see: #1 and #2).

~ The Weeknd – The Hills was definitely one of the best songs of 2015 ranking at #4 on my Top 45 of 2015 and for the second year in a row, it managed to make Top 5 for best of the year. Of course it didn't appear in my Top 45 of 2016 because it was already ranked in 2015 and I don't rank songs more than once. Plus it didn't even make it into 2016 on Hits 1 because it flopped for whatever unknown reason. But this is easily his best single. The production is incredible. That chorus is just phenomenal and the vocals are fantastic. This was one of those songs along with Ellie Goulding – Love Me Like You Do that had a serious shot at being my #1 pick of 2015. But I am thrilled to see this song here for a second year because it is just a fantastic song.

~ Then we have P!nk – Just Like Fire, which is another Top 5 favorite of mine this past year. It unfortunately only barely cracked the Top 10 on the Hot 100. But it's still a fantastic song in my book. But immediately following this song at #34 is another one of the worst songs of the year that just makes you go, "Wtf is this?!?!" I could go on a whole rant about this song, but I'm not to keep this post moving. But just know that if we get more songs like this one, we will be seeing a huge downfall in music.

~ Just a side note that there are a few songs in this list that are colored dark green. No, that does not mean I haven't heard the song. That's not what "no opinion" means. I always listen to every song I type in these posts. So there will never be a time where I haven't heard a song. If it's on Hit-Bound when I'm reviewing it, then I will listen to it so I can give it an honest review. So dark green just simply means no opinion. I use it rarely (because I pretty much always have an opinion), but I use it when I just don't know what to think of the song. These songs that are in dark green aren't necessarily good or bad or even okay. It may sound weird, but I don't know how else to put it. But yeah, just thought I'd clear that up.

~ Next we come to another one of the worst songs of the year in the form of Gold, the debut single by Kiiara. I watched TheDoubleAgent's review of this song in his Top 16 Worst Songs of 2016 video and I have honestly not seen a more accurate review. This song is a lot of empty space. It relies way too much on its excuse of a beat, Kiiara's excuse for vocals, and echo effects so that the song doesn't go through any awkward silences. The chorus is straight up obnoxious with those chopped up vocals because she couldn't be bothered to come up with more lyrics. The music video is dumb. The lyrics are dumb. Ultimately, the song just feels like nothing. There's nothing special about the so-called "chorus" as it doesn't stick out from the verses as anything exciting. There are those where the chorus just excites me. This one is not one of them. It just keeps that lame beat that's really easy to get sick of. Oh and I just realized that there's actually a remix of this song featuring Lil Wayne. So just when I thought this song couldn't get any worse, they bring him in. So yeah, I do hate this song. Definitely one of my least favorites this year and I do not anticipate any future releases from Kiiara.

~ As Jeremih was releasing more music, I started to realize how lame his voice is. It's not necessarily awful. But it feels very flat to me and doesn't show any talent. Typically R&B singers are the ones that have some of the best voices. Jeremih unfortunately does not fall under that category and when you have a song like Oui that has lame vocals and weak production, it doesn't call for a very good song.

~ Of course DJ Khaled's album was one that I'm sure a lot of people were anticipating the release of. Now I'll admit, DJ Khaled is not a bad artist or a bad producer. He does have some good songs. For Free, which was the lead single from his album Major Key, is not a bad song. It's not necessarily good either. But compared all the other rap music we've gotten this year, it's actually pretty decent. This isn't even the best song off the album in my opinion. Do You Mind is probably my favorite song on there. I've been enjoying it quite a bit lately. It's R&B songs like that one that I enjoy.

~ It's no surprise to see X Ambassadors – Unsteady on this chart. Obviously it was a successful song in 2016. But I am pleased to see that it wasn't ranked as high as Renegades was in 2015. In 2015, Renegades was ranked at the #54 song of the year, while this year Unsteady is #67.

~ And right after that, we have another song including X Ambassadors along with five other artists. It's the second of the two big singles from the Suicide Squad soundtrack, Sucker For Pain. I honestly don't know why I enjoy this song. It has an interesting beat and I like Imagine Dragons' chorus. The four rappers obviously don't sound amazing. But they don't sound bad either. It's just a catchy song in my opinion.

~ I do think Coldplay – Hymn For The Weekend is a little low, but frankly I'm glad it appeared at all. Hell, I didn't even think Adventure of a Lifetime would make the list, and sure enough it did. So I'm thrilled to see that Hymn For The Weekend made the list.

~ And somehow, Silentó – Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae) managed to make this list for a second year. I'm still pretty annoyed that this was ever even a hit. We even had songs this year like Juju On That Beat try to replicate it, but fail miserably. But come on, Watch Me is just the definition of stupid. Juju On That Beat is stupid 2.0.

~ Usher was definitely a favorite of mine back in the day when he released these fun R&B/pop jams that everyone got down to like DJ Got Us Fallin' In Love, Hot Tottie, and Scream. Even Yeah! was catchy at some point to me. But now he has turned into this trap artist that I don't even recognize anymore. It's like before he was Anakin Skywalker, and now he's Darth Vader. That's the best analogy I can come up with because he really did turn to the dark side and his music is now at an all time low. It legitimately sucks and No Limit is a good example. Young Thug is not the kind of artist I'd be necessarily proud to have featured on my song. But that's just my opinion.

~ And finally, landing at #100 just barely making it on the chart, we have One Direction – Perfect. I'll admit that Billboard has been kind of underrating One Direction's most recent music. Yes, Drag Me Down did reach #3, but it didn't stay there that long and ended up ranking at #65 in 2015. Perfect is a really good song and it saddens me a little that it wasn't a massive hit on this chart like it was on Hits 1. Yes, I did get very sick of this song at some point. But regardless, it was a really good song to begin with and it is a really good song now that I haven't heard it in a long time. But I am glad it made the list.

So there it is! My review of the Year-End Top 100 songs according to Billboard. I was reasonably satisfied with how this list turned out, somewhat. I mean, we did have some songs a little bit on the shittier side. But we certainly had some songs that were simply fantastic. I'm sorry it took so long to get this post out. I of course have been very busy with the start of second semester. But now that this is done, the next thing on the agenda are the other posts I'm pretty behind on. This includes the 900,000 pageview special, which I have headway into. So I hope to get that out soon. But this was my review of the Year-End Billboard Hot 100 for 2016 and I hope you enjoyed. :)

  1. On a scale of 0 to 500, where would Billboard's list go, from the same type of ranking scale of 0-5?

My guess: 256/500 (I just came up with a random number)

  2. I would have expected the same type of Billboard Year End review like what me and Graham did, but I understand you have a lot of work, and so little time to do such a thing.

I think Justin has more talent now then he did years ago, and I still think his older music is unlistenable. And if Love Yourself is Justin's worse song off of Purpose, I can live with it a bit as the #1 song of 2016. I will admit, I have grown into it a little, mostly because of the line "You should go an love yourself"

For me, its the guitar, and the backing vocals that make up One Dance for me.

Yeah, I still don't mind Work all that much. I've heard worse from Rihanna, and trust me, this is nowhere near as bad as Birthday Cake.

Nope, still think Stressed Out is amazing. I feel like some songs cannot die due to overplay alone.

And then we had the massacre in 2016 involving Prince resurgence, and Beyoncé's new album being great.

Yeah, but Sorry had more chart longevity than Hello. Sorry spent more time on the chart than Hello, despite having only 3 weeks at #1.

I said it was mediocre, and then I fell in love with it. While most of the critics fell into the hatedom for Closer, saying it had the worst drop of 2016. (Me Too and TIWYCF have worse drops)

Easily my favorite DJ Mustard song, and I actually like the synth tone on the chorus.

It seems there is a market available for generic EDM songs in 2016. Most critics would say its existed since 1998-2001, but I digress.

I'm just glad Twenty One Pilots released the great single off of Blurryface, and actually made themselves better during that era instead of going more like their previous 3 albums.

    Best meme of 2015.

Its okay yeah, but not bad.

Its dark, and energetic, its everything I want from The Weeknd, and thank God he continued with Starboy.

I still don't see why Just Like Fire and songs like this and Fight Song keep ending up on so many worst lists.

Oh, I thought they would be just mediocre.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

I think Oui is just cute, from the vocals to the sped up synths, its just fucking cute alright!

No, Drake made For Free worse.

    ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

I thin I was a bit too nice with this song. I should have ranked it as mediocre. The vocals are nice and the chorus is okay, but nothing else sticks out for me.

It peaked pretty low, and didn't have a lot of longevity, that's why.

    Agreed.

A great analogy, but I thought it originally started with his 2010 release of OMG, his worst song to date.

Its not Billboard underrating it, it just doesn't get much airplay, sales, YouTube and streaming after the first month after its release. If you've ever noticed that most 1D songs tend to debut high, and then start flopping quickly.

    - How is Here still in red a year later? (Please don't say overplay…)
    - If you didn't count The Hills in your Top 5 due to being a repeat, would Love Yourself have been purple instead?
    - Didn't you say back in the summer that you hated For Free? I guess you grew into it a little. Likewise I recall you saying Too Good was alright but guess not.

      - Yes, Love Yourself would've been in purple.
      - I tend to grow in and out of songs at random times. Just recently I listened to both songs again and For Free ended up being the better one by a little bit.

Remember when I said that my 10,000 pageview Q&A was going to come out soon? Well that may not happen, because I don't have a lot of questions. And let me be honest, they don't all have to be music related questions. They can be about TV, movies, video games, current events, etc. So please, I really appreciate having more questions fro me to answer.

      Delete
    3. Except for that song with Travi$ Scott that's only okay.

      Delete
    4. Fuck Migos, they suck!

      Delete
    5. No they don't, they're definitely better than you. Three guys rapping can be better than one.

      Delete
    6. Not if their rapping is the same fucking thing about drugs, sex, shoes, money, and hoes that we've all heard about 3 billion times before. That and their flow is terrible, the production is weak, and their vocals are awful and boring. Educate yourself you fucking snake of a child!

      Delete
    7. Add Parker to the list of people that SliderOnTheBack hates on.

      Delete
    8. And that just so happens to be one of the main genres of music out there. Either get used to it or find a different blog that's not music-related to comment on.

      Delete
    9. Or maybe you should find somewhere else with people you likes you shitty rap music. Last I checked, all of us like pop more than your shitty rap music, Even Adrian hates it.

      Delete
    10. Oh, you just love everything that's not boring you fucking snake!

      Delete
    11. You know what, why are you even doing this anyway? What is the good that comes out of complaining about people on this blog? Why do you try to hurt people's feelings on certain comments they post? Why are you making this comment section look horrible? That's our issue here, it is our job to make this comment section to look as good as possible and people like you just ruin it. You are not funny at all. This is a blog about a fucking countdown. This is not a place to hate on.

      Delete
    12. So why are you doing it then?

      Delete
    13. Because I have a reason, and that reason is you.

      Delete
    14. This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.

      Delete
    15. Adrian, get rid of this anonymous person and delte all their comments!!!! Also make it so that anyone who wants to comment must have a blogger account. Now we'll see who you really are, Anonymous!

      Delete
    16. No. I will not leave this blog. You are the one that has been causing problems this past week. And the name-calling for those four people is absolutely offensive.

      Delete
    17. Also, you said your favorite song on the countdown is Scars to Your Beautiful? That's a song about girl-power, and you are clearly trying to decrease Leah and WAMB10's girl-power.

      Delete
    18. Are you fucking stupid? I'm not SOTB or whatever his fucking name is! I don't need a fucking blogger account, I can do as I please, and there is nothing you can do to stop me.

      Delete
    19. We're not unlike you. Try commenting on either of my blogs if you think you're so smart.

      Delete
    20. Why would I do that, when I could just say your a fucking idiot from putting Hello, Downtown, Perfect Illusion, Sorry, and Thinking Out Loud in your bottom 10. And by the way Downtown and Thinking Out Loud are 2015 songs, not 2016 you idiot. Same with some of your dishonorable mentions. There is nothing bad about I Took A Pill In Ibiza, Good Grief, All About Us and Black Magic. And Black Magic is another 2015 song, not 2016! Learn the difference between 2015 and 2016 you stupid idiot.

      Delete
    21. He is right about the whole year thing Mark. Downtown and Thinking Out Loud, shouldn't have been included in your bottom 10. And really, I Took A Pill In Ibiza and Black Magic? ITAPII is 2016, and should not be up for consideration for 2017, and Black Magic shouldn't have even been mentioned because it was from 2015, not 2016. I don't care if they exited in a certain month of the year, Black Magic is 2015, and ITAPII is 2016.

      Delete
    22. You're the stupid idiot that can't even read! Can't you see that the list is just the songs that left in early 2017?????? Read! Besides, who cares if the song is from 2015? As long as it was on the weekend countdown in 2016 I can put it on there!!!!

And these are my opinions, not yours. So learn to like that!

      Delete
    23. @Miles I have my own style of ranking songs.

      Delete
    24. What do you mean "Are you fucking stupid"? You're the one that's stupid. You're offending and insulting a lot of people just because of the way they comment and their taste in music. Learn to respect people's opinions for once. I know that you hate Migos and Kodak Black, and I will respect your opinion, although I love both artists. It is UNACCEPTABLE for you to go and start yelling and cursing at me just because I like rap and you don't. What the hell did I ever do to you? I'm not some asshole that likes rap just to piss off other people. I like it because I think it's unique and different from most other genres, which makes it fun to listen to. I also have dreams of becoming a rapper or producer myself one day, which is another reason for that. Honestly, I don't give a damn about what you have to say. You're just a jerk looking for more attention. And it's not working.

      Delete
    25. Besides, as 2015 was actually a good year for music, they would've been in my bottom 3 of 2015.

      Delete
    26. Yeah, I do agree with Miles on this.

      Delete
    27. Thank you ., and besides I just don't like that type of style because the songs themselves were not as prevalent in one year as they were in other years, and it just doesn't make much sense either way.

      Delete
    28. But why? I do things based off of exits. In fact, starting this week I'm putting up a new feature on my blog called "Songs that Exited This Week One Year Ago." While you guys do it based off of entrants, I do all mine based off of exits. This is, of course, excluding the top 45 songs list.

      Delete
    29. Because if a song spent more time on any chart in 2015 than 2016, it should be considered a 2015 song, and not up for 2016 consideration. Hello and Sorry are the 2 exceptions because both of those came out in the tail end of 2015, and remained on the charts in 2016 a lot longer and can be considered as both. I'm making this so confusing aren't I? Basically a song like Black Magic debuts in the middle of 2015, its a 2015 song. ITAPII debuted in early 2016, its a 2016 song. Do you see what I mean, songs released or debuted on certain dates count towards one year, and one year only. The only exceptions I try to make is the year end charts if it was higher in one year than another.

      Delete
    30. So I can't consider ITAPII on my top 45 songs of 2017? Hmmm.... The only reason I got sick of it was due to overplay. I'm giving it another chance as I used to like it a lot. Anyways....

      Delete
    31. No, not even the top 45 of 2017, unless in certain aspects. If a song was released in around mid-November to December, there may be an exception in certain cases, at least for me there are. I also base it on peak position, where the song peaked, and what year. I'd continue to horribly explain, but even I'm getting tired, and drinking Coke isn't helping me in the slightest.

      Delete
    32. Anonymous: I have no problem with you giving your own opinion. But putting other people down because of it is simply unacceptable. I am very much in favor of the first amendment (freedom of speech) as long as you do not call other people out because their opinions don't match yours. Our differences in opinions create our diversity, which makes life more interesting than if everyone just felt the same way about everything. I'm fine with debates as long as we're being nice to each other. Otherwise, I will just delete your comments and we will move on with life.

  16. Nice post! This was lots of fun to read and I'm glad that you still dislike Here. I'm definitely not surprised by the hip hop in red.

For the WC this week, don't expect any entrants, but Shoutout To My Ex aired!

    And now on z100:
    That's What I Like
    Down (Marian Hill)
    Make Me (Cry)
    Issues

Every one of them surprises me but the third. I didn't think the last one would become popular or a commercial could lead to airplay. And I thought the first one wouldn't happen so early.

    And AT40 highlights:
    SML (TYNL) exits from #39.

    Rockabye debuts at #40.

In The Name Of Love has the biggest drop down 12 spots to #31.

Shape Of You has the biggest jump up 12 spots to #30.

No top 10 entrants yet again.

Words, HandClap, and Do You Mind are on the verge. Make Me (Cry) is the breakout.

    Top 5:
    5. Starving (--)
    4. Closer (--)
    3. Scars To Your Beautiful (-1)
    2. Side To Side (-1)
    1. Don't Wanna Know (+2) [1st Week]

Other surprising or notable drops (last week's position first then this week's)
    The Greatest (11-18)
    Blow Your Mind (Mwah) (24-30)
    Fake Love (29-24)
    I Feel It Coming (17-12)

And my Billboard post should be out tonight.

Well for one, you know I hate the Patriots with a burning passion, (Even more than most AFC North rivals of the Ravens) that and I've always liked the Falcons, and since they're "the highest scoring offense in the league" as well as taking out the Packers, a fan favorite team, I have hope they will win. Because if they don't goodbye football forever, and hello NASCAR!

I've played more Mario games that are more fun and entertaining than most Sonic games. That and the Sonic fandom is just, the worst, whereas Mario has like no fandom left that I know of besides a few.

      Coca-Cola because, why not.

    4. .: Seriously? I have never heard of anyone under the age of 30 hating soda.

    5. I don't drink soda either. I pretty much always drink water. Sounds boring, but I personally really like water.

    6. I mean, I drink like 5-10 bottles of water a day, but I also love Coca-Cola as well.

    7. I'm not a huge fan of video games like Mario and Sonic, but Mario is the better of the two. I mostly play sports video games, such as Madden (both mobile and console) and the NHL series. I also like games like Minecraft and Higheay Rider. I used to love math games like Make It Rain and Cookie Clicker, but those have died down on me.

    8. I don't really drink any non-diet soda. But I'd take Pepsi.

Mario. His games tend to be more enjoyable even if they're the same formula.

Falcons. I am so sick of the Patriots always running away with every game.

And I like this, hence why I decided to add QOTDs to my countdown posts starting with last week's.

    9. Coco Cola - But they're pretty much the same thing.

Mario - I don't really like either now but when I was younger I preferred them.

Falcons - Even if they beat the Packers, I still hate the Patriots more.

  31. So, sorry to disrupt from the countdown prowess, but here's yet another critic posting his best list:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7e6Hwcmj-Y (Part 1)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zm_Qx1x1zG4 (Part 2)

    Notes:
    - #7 will probably be the most unusual inclusion.
    - #6 through 3 are givens.
    - His #2 pick I thought would be his #1 for sure, and it's one that Adrian, Graham, Mark and WAMB10 will be very disappointed by.
    - His honorable mentions included three songs that weren't real hits but he included because they would've been pretty high if they were.
    - His #1, on the other hand, will come as a pretty interesting surprise.

    2. No surprise that Water Under The Bridge is in the Top 10 because of Adele, and it's really nice to see Mercy (currently my favorite song on the countdown) also entering the Top 10!

But Chase You Down? Really? Who expected that?! I'm not complaining though, I still like it.

    4. Water Under The Bridge I never really cared for during its time as a hit.

Mercy is still good, but Treat You Better will always be my favorite song from him. I don't think it sounds like a top 10 song though.

I don't like Chase You Down, mainly because I find it to be a worse reproduction of Sugar by Robin Schulz, which was a hit about a year ago. The song also just doesn't appeal to me, but it isn't anything awful.
