New Entrants
~ I believe these are the last debuts I'll be reviewing for the year. And I'm glad three out of the four were able to make it (even though they're not eligible for my Year-End countdown). Coming in at #40 we have Walk The Moon making their return with One Foot. Last we heard from these guys, Shut Up and Dance was Hits 1's #1 song of 2015 and Different Colors pretty much flopped (unfortunately). One Foot is definitely a banger and I find it hard not to enjoy this. It's undeniably full of energy and it honestly just puts me in a good mood. When listening to this song and watching the music video, it feels like the band, especially Nick Petricca, is having a blast. That happiness rubs off on me every time I listen to this song. Shut Up and Dance had its time, and I feel like One Foot is a step in the right direction. This is the kind of music we need, music that will make us feel better in dark times.

~ Next we have Liam Payne with Bedroom Floor. I didn't care too much for this at first. But now after more listens, it's really not a good song. Lyrically, it is similar to Strip That Down and Get Low. The vocals aren't that good either. Liam's falsetto is kind of annoying. There's not much else to say about this. Ultimately it's not that far off from Strip That Down. I don't think Liam will ever come out with anything good. I'm hoping this doesn't last as long as Strip That Down. But given that this isn't as big of a hit (or really a hit at all), I don't think it'll last that long.

~ As a little present for Louis Tomlinson's birthday this past Sunday, we get Miss You on the countdown. Unlike Liam, I'm a fan of Louis and I really like his music. Miss You is a bit different from what we've previously heard from him. There are some nice guitars and Tomlinson's vocals sound really good. I like the songwriting and the production is pretty good. All in all, it's a very enjoyable song. Almost as good as Back To You and definitely better than Just Like You. I'm patiently waiting for Louis to bring us an album like three of the other One Direction members have at this point. But for now, this song is really good.

~ With the highest debut of the week, we have our first Eminem song since 2014 brought us Headlights with fun.'s Nate Ruess. This week, we have River featuring Ed Sheeran, who brings his fifth song currently on the countdown. I'll admit, Revival is definitely not his best work. But River is one of the better songs from that album and I'm glad it was able to make its debut. Eminem's verses flow really nice and I think Ed Sheeran sounds great in the chorus. Two artists that have always been the best at what they do. I think they're a great duo. I hope this song does well because I really like it.

~ Let You Down is definitely one of the more enjoyable rap songs I've heard this year. It's nothing special by any means. But I really like it compared to most other rap songs I've heard this year. It's really nice to see Alan Walker finally get the recognition he deserves similar to Kygo (a fellow Norwegian DJ). All Falls Down really showcases his talent as a producer. It's a very enjoyable track. The vocals are pretty good too. I would like to see this on the countdown.

~ G-Eazy and Halsey is one of those collaborations that I didn't know I needed in my life until I heard Him & I. I think they're a really good collab. I like G-Eazy's verses and Halsey sounds pretty good in the chorus. Never Be The Same is exactly why I didn't like Camila Cabello before Havana. I don't think her voice sounds good in this song. Maybe it'll grow on me. But I doubt it.

Merry Blurbmas!

~ It's nice to see Perfect at #1. I definitely prefer this over every other song in the Top 5. I wouldn't even mind this song spending a few more weeks at the top. What I want is for songs like Thunder to start dropping soon.

~ While not spending very many weeks in the Top 10, Kesha – Praying has really been going strong. I'm quite impressed and I'm very happy about it. Hopefully it can stick around a bit longer.

~ I'm not too thrilled to see Lauv – I Like Me Better in the Top 20. If this song is going to be on the countdown, the very least it can do is not infect the Top 20. Otherwise I would appreciate if this song would leave soon.

~ Shawn Mendes – There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back is starting to test my patience. It has already become a station changer with how much it's been overplayed. I would like to see this song out of the Top 30 soon.

~ Demi Lovato – Sorry Not Sorry took a really nice drop towards the bottom of the Top 30. Thankfully this only spent one week at the top spot. I still want to see Tell Me You Love Me on the countdown. I'm not sure why this song is just being ignored. It's definitely the better song by a long shot.

~ With the debut of Miss You, we're back to every One Direction member currently having a song on the countdown. Although it's pretty obvious Harry won't be with us very much longer. And it's very disappointing that Liam had to become not only a Hits 1 favorite, but a fan favorite as well, hence why Strip That Down was a #1 hit.

~ As far as the exits go, Body Like A Back Road should've left a long time ago. Despacito lasted a lot longer than I thought it would. Same goes for Rain as it didn't even reach the Top 20. 1-800 stayed for a good while, so I'm happy about that.

~ With this week's debuts likely being the last set of debuts of the year, it's safe to say that every song currently on the countdown has successfully made it into 2018. Congratulations to all.

Year-End Special: 2017 – A Year In Review

And just like that, another year has gone by. It seems like time keeps going by faster and faster. Although we didn't lose as many musical stars as last year, we did lose Chester Bennington from Linkin Park, one of the biggest rock bands that certainly made a difference in peoples' lives. May he rest in peace. He will certainly be missed. In terms of the music, things were not that different in 2017 than they were in 2016. The quality of the music that, say, hits #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 has gone down substantially. We're at the point where songs like Bodak Yellow can hit #1 in the country. This is basically saying that anyone can have a #1 hit, despite your talent level. Seriously? The U.S. is the only country that had Bodak Yellow as a #1 song. And aside from Canada, in no other country did it even reach the Top 10.


I guess what I'm getting at is that music has been going downhill, especially since rap music is now bigger than ever. Don't get me wrong, we've had a bunch of really good songs this past year. But with those good songs, we've also had some shitty ones that have outperformed the good ones on charts like the Billboard Hot 100. In a little bit, I'm going to be counting down the 10 worst songs of 2017. But I'm restricting that list to songs that made it on to the Weekend Countdown. However, I do still want to recognize several songs that did not make it on to the countdown that were, what I would consider, atrocious. So before we get to the Bottom 10, here are some of the worst songs of the year that did not make it on to the Weekend Countdown.

Bottom 10 Songs of 2017

10. Flo Rida/99 Percent – Cake
I typically enjoy Flo Rida's music for the most part. He's never been a stand-out artist by any means. But he has had some pretty good stuff in the past. This song is probably the worst of the bunch. It's beyond annoying. The lyrical content is really not that great. The vocals are pretty bad. Thankfully this didn't actually become a hit.

9. Zayn/PartyNextDoor – Still Got Time
I don't see the appeal whatsoever. As much as songs like I Don't Wanna Live Forever were overplayed, it's still a lot better than this. The production here is pretty lazy and there's really nothing interesting about it. Zayn doesn't show what he's capable of vocally. It's a messy song all in all. He certainly has some good songs, but this is not one of them. Thankfully this only lasted two weeks on the countdown. But frankly, it shouldn't have even been there at all.

8. Noah Cyrus/Labrinth – Make Me (Cry)
Noah Cyrus does not have a good voice. Like at all. Just because you're related to Miley Cyrus doesn't automatically make you as talented as her. This girl is nowhere near as talented as Miley. Not by a long shot. This song is boring and forgettable. I don't feel any emotion from the song or her voice. Not even Labrinth, who had one of the best songs of 2013, could save the song. Fortunately, this wasn't a massive hit and it didn't last very long on Hits 1.

7. Julia Michaels – Uh Huh
I think Julia Michaels wins the award this year for worst voice. She shows no vocal talent whatsoever on this track. I guess she sounds okay in the verses. But I absolutely cannot stand the chorus when her voice starts cracking so much. No, this is not cool nor is it "trendy." I listen for talent. That is not talent. I don't know who thought this was okay. The lyrics aren't that good either. But the guitars are somewhat tolerable. I'm glad this ended up flopping. Here's to hoping her next single will be better.

6. AJR – Weak
There's something about AJR that I just can't stand. I'm sure they're nice guys and all. But their songwriting just makes me cringe every time. I feel like this was supposed to be some kind of self-empowerment song saying that it's okay to be weak. But it was executed so poorly that it just sounds like some little childish song that's hard to take seriously. The chorus is obnoxious, especially when you hit the final chorus. I've never liked these guys and after listening to what their album, The Click, has to offer, I now have a good reason as to why.

5. Hey Violet – Guys My Age
This song's production is beyond cringe-worthy and it's furthest thing from sexy I've ever heard. But that's not even the biggest problem I have with this song. I can't stand the lyrics. The lead vocalist is 19 years old and she has a problem with guys her age. What I'm getting is that she assumes all guys her age are assholes that don't "treat her." But as someone that is around her age, I want to point out that this is not true. And she thinks the solution is to date older men. There are a lot of guys her age that are mature, so it seems kind of rude to say that all guys her age don't know how to treat women. Maybe I over-analyzed the song or took the lyrics too literally. But either way, the song is shit. I don't know how this made it on to Hits 1. I legitimately don't.

4. Childish Gambino – Redbone
I don't even know what this song is. It's probably the strangest "song" I've heard all year. I've listened to the song the whole way through a few times and I was weirded out throughout the whole song every time. The production and lyrical content are very strange. The vocals are even stranger and they're actually kind of annoying. There honestly isn't even much more to say about this. It's one of those songs that you have to listen to, and then you'll understand what I'm getting at (hopefully).

3. Liam Payne – Strip That Down
Liam was the last One Direction member to go solo and sure enough, he ended up being the worst. I like Niall's acoustic-pop, Louis' electro-pop, and Harry's classic rock. I have mixed feelings about Zayn, but he does have some good songs. But Liam just had to take on this hip-hop sound that sounds no different than a good chunk of the other mainstream hip-hop/rap songs. The lyrics are no good, which I find interesting considering that this song had like a million songwriters (including Ed Sheeran). The vocals are okay, but Liam doesn't show any vocal talent necessarily. There was no point in this song that I thought Liam stood out from the other One Direction members vocally. And like I said, it sounds like the same kind of hip hop/trap song that we now hear on a regular basis. So does his music really stand out? Not at all. He's trying to be like everyone else. And Liam, did you really have to have a diss at One Direction, the band that got you where you are now? It's sad that this song actually hit #1 on Hits 1. It's as if people don't know what good music is anymore. Oh well. People somehow like this. I hate it.

2. Julia Michaels – Issues
I never liked this song. Even when it first debuted on Hit-Bound, I was already questioning its existence. But it's because of this song that Julia Michaels got nominated for all these "Best New Artist" awards. I can appreciate her as a songwriter, but I don't like her as an artist. This is another song that has very strange production and pacing. The vocals are not good whatsoever. But I think one of the reasons why I hate this song is because people have been praising it so much. I have friends that sing along to this nonstop and it just makes the song that much more unbearable. And I don't get it. I don't get what all the hype is about. I don't get why people love this song so much. I guess the songwriting doesn't suck. But everything else just makes this song unlistenable in my opinion. Her voice isn't even that bad. It's just songs like these where she sounds really weird and not very appealing. But if you listen to songs like Carry Me by Kygo, you'd know that she has a decent voice. She just doesn't seem to know how to use it. Hopefully if she releases something in 2018, it'll be MUCH better than this.

1. Selena Gomez – Bad Liar
Selena Gomez had three songs in last year's dishonorable mentions. My guess is that she actually wanted to be in the Bottom 10 songs of that year. So she decided to try again this year with a song that couldn't have possibly missed this list: Bad Liar. I don't understand all the critical acclaim nor do I understand how people could possibly consider this her best song. She has had so many better songs. This is shit. She is mumbling and whispering throughout the whole song. Nowhere in the song do I think, "Wow. She has a great voice." She does have a good voice, but she doesn't use it in this song. She does in her DJ collabs. But in this and Fetish, it seems like the mumbling Selena is the way to go. It's not. It sounds really bad. Like REALLY bad. The production is extremely underwhelming. It's almost not even there. The song is basically nothing. But I guess the main problem with this song is that Selena Gomez actually thinks this is okay. This song sounds a lot like Hands To Myself and some other songs from Revival. And like those songs, this sounds really bad. Yet she continues with this sound. I much preferred her older upbeat music. But at some point she decided to try a sultry-type sound that I really don't think works for her. Now, single after single, she continues to prove that she is not that good as a solo artist. I'm sure we'll be getting more from her soon. Hopefully she can find a sound that actually suits her. I would hate it to have to include her again in my Bottom 10 songs of 2018.



Our list of #1 songs this year isn't that much different than any other year. But we really didn't have very many songs dominating the countdown in 2017, which makes the #1 song of the year reasonably obvious. So it seems like there are more songs that hit #1 this year than any other year recently as we did have a lot of one-weekers. This list is okay for the most part. A couple of these songs got too overplayed and a couple were bad from the start. But other than that, the remaining songs were pretty good and somewhat deserving. From this list, I will announce my 2017 Lights Over Paris Hit-Bound Hero Award. This award is given to the best song to make it on to Hit-Bound, but fail to debut the countdown. So it's essentially the best song on this list. There were a lot of good songs this time around. But this song I'm about to announce is one I've loved since the very first time I heard it and I was very disappointed when it didn't make it on to the Weekend Countdown.


2017 Lights Over Paris Hit-Bound Hero Award Winner: Carly Rae Jepsen – Cut To The Feeling


This song is honestly a pop masterpiece. It had me hooked from start to end. I'm not sure why Carly Rae Jepsen is as underrated as she is because she is a very talented artist. Some people probably still think of her as the annoying Call Me Maybe girl. But Cut To The Feeling shows that she is capable of so much more. It's sad that this didn't really become a hit.

Hits 1 is pretty good about picking up as many hit songs as they can. But they also tend to pick up some underground songs that aren't exactly hits. This isn't bad by any means, but it does result in some hit songs not being able to make it on to the station. Hits 1 tends to leave out rap music for the most part, which is understandable as it is a family station. But there are some pop songs they miss every now and then. It seemed as though they almost didn't pick up Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee/Justin Bieber – Despacito. They ended up getting it, but a little late. But then there are songs like J Balvin & Willy William – Mi Gente that just didn't make the cut apparently. So now I will present the Biggest Whiff of the Year award, the award that goes to the biggest song that failed to make it on to Hits 1. This song in particular was the highest ranked song on the Billboard Year-End chart for 2017 that did not make it on to Hits 1. So I think it deserves this honor.

This year, we had a few songs that had a short countdown life. But there was one song in particular that lasted only one week on the countdown.

For the longest tenure, it's pretty clear that this song is on its way to lasting a year on the countdown. I'm guessing it'll end up being Hits 1's #1 song of 2017 as well. By spending the most weeks on the countdown within the calendar year, here is the longest tenured song of the year.

New Entrants
~ First up we have Symon, who I believe is one of the hosts from Hits 1 in Hollywood. She debuts this week with Lonely Girl. I can appreciate the song for what it is, but it's really nothing special. It's definitely better than her previous song, Say. But other than that, this song doesn't stand out very much. It's okay at the moment.

~ Next we have Macklemore/Kesha – Good Old Days, the next single after Glorious. I thought it would be difficult for Macklemore to top Glorious. But sure enough, Good Old Days is at about the same height. They're two totally different songs, but they're each amazing in their own ways. Everything about this new song is fantastic. I love Macklemore's verses and I think Kesha sounds great in the chorus. The lyrical content is fantastic as it's essentially about looking back on your life remembering the good old days. It's a well-written and well-produced track. It's one of the best things we have at the moment along with its predecessor. Here's to hoping it can do as well as Glorious.

Good Old Blurbs

~ It's no shock to see Camila Cabello at the top given how big Havana has gotten. I'm fine with this as it is actually a pretty good song. The only thing I don't like about it is Young Thug's verse, but thankfully Hits 1 plays the edited version. I'm fine with this at the top for now, but I would much prefer to see Perfect at #1 soon.

~ I'm a little surprised by how well Love So Soft has done given that it's not exactly a massive hit. I'll admit that the song isn't the worst thing ever. I've heard the whole song several times this past week and it's not as bad as I thought. But the chorus is still not very enjoyable. Clarkson can do better.

~ Bebe Rexha/Florida Georgia Line – Meant To Be seems to be doing pretty well at the moment. While it's one many are not a fan of, I enjoy the song for what it is and I personally think it's a nice collab. I'm glad it's getting some recognition.

~ Zayn/Sia – Dusk Till Dawn made quite an unexpected jump into the Top 20 this week. I'm surprised by this given that the song isn't a massive hit at the moment. I'm glad Hits 1 can agree that it's a good song and much better than Still Got Time. I hope this one sticks around longer.

~ P!nk – What About Us and Macklemore/Skylar Grey – Glorious both took some big drops out of the Top 20 from the Top 10. I'm hoping both of them can stay for a little while longer similar to songs like Stay, Attention, and Lights Down Low.

~ This week we lost two great songs. Save Me A Place was probably the best underground song Hits 1 picked up on this year. I've never heard anything like it and I now want to keep up with Mono Mind if they release anything in the future. Something Just Like This was another great song that I'm glad was able to reach #1. While some may think of this song as nothing more than a rehash of Roses, I think of it as one of the best songs of the year. You both will be missed.

~ First up we have Harry Styles debuting with Kiwi. I'm kind of surprised this song actually made it on the countdown. It's a really cool song that has a strong classic rock vibe, something we don't usually hear on this station. That being said, I already know it's gonna do poorly on this countdown. I really want it to do well. But I just can't picture it going any other way. But regardless, it's an awesome song.

~ Next we have a debut that I've been waiting for for quite a while now. It's the return of X Ambassadors with Ahead of Myself. This song is the reason why I like X Ambassadors. The vocals really stand out in this song. I really like the chorus. It's not as good as Renegades, but it's a very enjoyable song and much better than Unsteady. I hope it does well here even though it's not a massive hit right now.

~ Finally we have Nick Jonas making his return with Find You. I did give this song a little too much praise when it made its first appearance on Hit-Bound. But I do really like this song. It's better than Jealous, Levels, Close, and Bacon combined. Not as good as Chains, but it's definitely one of his better songs. I like the production and the vocals are good too. There are no unnecessary high notes. I feel like I would enjoy Nick Jonas' music more if he made more songs like this. I would like to see this song do well.

~ I'm honestly not sure what to think of Sober Up. It's nowhere near their worst and it's actually a step up from their most recent work. The vocals are pretty good for the most part. But the lyrical content is stupid and their music just feels childish to me. I don't know. I'm pretty split right now. I also think it's interesting that Rivers Cuomo from Weezer is on this song.

~ Miss You is definitely a step up from Just Like You and I'm so glad that it made it on here. One of the things I've noticed about Louis is that he does what he wants. Meanwhile, Liam seems to do whatever it takes to keep himself relevant, which is one of the reasons why I don't like him. Louis does his own thing and while it may not get him as high up on the charts, he certainly gets my respect.

~ Whatever is a pretty weird song. I don't really like the beat. The vocals are just meh. I think the song is pretty underwhelming for the most part. I don't think I'll be coming back to it after it leaves the Hits 1 rotation. I also watched the music video and maybe it's just me, but I don't like the concept having the whole video take place on an iPhone, especially when it's vertical the whole time. The whole video has these huge black borders with nothing but empty space on the sides. I just think it looks really bad and unprofessional.

~ Now that Reputation was finally released on Apple Music, I was able to listen to End Game in full. I think it's a pretty good song. Again, it's not as good as some of the singles from 1989. But this is one of the better tracks from this album. I like the contributions all three artists and it's a cool song. However, I don't think it'll stick with me in the long run.

~ Songs like Bruno Mars – Chunky and Imagine Dragons – Whatever It Takes have been here for quite a while now. I have a feeling they won't be making it on to the countdown. I can't care less about the former, but the thought of the latter leaving is a little depressing. It is so much better than Thunder.

~ Walk The Moon – One Foot is currently the best song on Hits 1. This is an absolute necessity for the Weekend Countdown. Seriously, the song is fantastic. If this does not make it on the countdown, I will not take it too kindly.

~ If I were new to Hits 1, I would be very confused by our #1 song. Galway Girl being at the top was okay the first couple of times. But now it's a little too much for a song that wasn't even a big hit. This song is nowhere near as good as Castle On The Hill, so I don't think it deserved to exceed that song for weeks at the top. Let's get Perfect at #1 instead.

~ Camila Cabello – Havana is at #2. This is pretty reasonable as it's #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 as well. Although I feel like it actually has a shot at #1 on here, which would be interesting since Fifth Harmony never had a #1 hit on this countdown. I wouldn't mind seeing this at #1 song. It's actually a good song and I'm glad this was picked as a single.

~ Love So Soft appears to be back in the Top 10. Nope. This is not good. Can we please keep Glorious in the Top 10 instead?

~ Cheat Codes/Demi Lovato – No Promises and Mono Mind – Save Me A Place had some big drops this week. They're both really good songs that I hope can stay for a little while longer. There are a few songs I would like to go see leave first.

~ As The Script – Rain falls into the Bottom 5, this could very well be its last week here. It lasted a little longer than I thought it would, which is good. And at least it was here at all.

~ As far as the exits go, I'm happy to see the departures from Why and That's What I Like. Though it is a little sad to see Heartless leave so soon. I thought this was a good pick for Hits 1. It's sad that the voters didn't agree. I would've loved to see it do well.
