New Entrants
~ First up this week, we have Alex Aiono with Big Mistake. I have no idea who this guy is, but this song is great. I enjoyed it a lot when it debuted on Hit-Bound and I still enjoy it a lot now. It's fun and it's catchy. I love the chorus. His voice sounds great. I like the lyrics. There's a lot to like about this song. It probably won't last long, but I personally would like to see it do well.

~ Next we have Ariana Grande, who has not been that good this year in my opinion. No Tears Left To Cry was overrated and God Is A Woman is just not good. We even have a newer song from her, which I'll be discussing in the Hit-Bound section. But debuting this week, we have Breathin, which is easily the best song I've heard from Ariana this year and probably the best off of Sweetener. I really like the production and she actually shows off her voice very nicely here, which is great. I know she's very talented and has a great voice. So I'm glad she uses it here. Overall, I think this is a great song and the best song I've heard from Ariana since Into You.

Best Debut of the Week: Ariana Grande – Breathin (only by a short amount)

Hit-Bound
~ Here is the Hit-Bound list.

  • Camila Cabello – Consequences
  • Twenty One Pilots – Chlorine
  • Steve Aoki/BTS – Waste It On Me
  • Imagine Dragons – Machine (DEBUT)
  • Little Mix/Nicki Minaj – Woman Like Me
  • 5 Seconds of Summer – Killer Queen
  • Lauv/Julia Michaels – There's No Way
  • Post Malone/Swae Lee – Sunflower
  • Olly Murs/Snoop Dogg – Moves (DEBUT)
  • Lauren Jauregui – Expectations (DEBUT)
  • Alec Benjamin – Let Me Down Slowly
  • Ellie Goulding/Diplo/Swae Lee – Close To Me
  • David Guetta/Anne-Marie – Don't Leave Me Alone
  • Shawn Mendes – Nervous
  • Ariana Grande – Thank U, Next (DEBUT)

~ I listened to Imagine Dragons' album Origins and I was not impressed for the most part. This week we have Machine, which is one of the worst tracks off the album, if not the worst. The song is just so messy. It tries to be this rock anthem, when in actuality it's just a pop song with an unusual amount of yelling. The guitar solo sounds very out of place. This is just terrible. You know it's bad when I prefer listening to Thunder over this. Also, was it necessary to release Origins not long after Evolve came out??? It's giving Imagine Dragons overexposure, something another certain artist is also going to have.

~ Olly Murs makes his return to Hits 1 this week with Moves. It might just be me, but I feel like his voice sounds slightly different than it used to. But anyway, I really like this song. It's very cool and groovy. The production is on point. I like his vocals. I kind of wish Hits 1 didn't edit out Snoop Dogg's verse because I thought he was a nice presence. But either way, this is a great song. I hope it debuts on the countdown soon.

~ Next we have Lauren Jauregui with I believe her debut single as a solo artist titled Expectations. I like the guitar here. I think it sounds very slick. But my god. Her vocals are so bad it ruins the song for me. This actually would've been a pretty good had it been sung by another artist. But Lauren just does not have a good voice. So yeah. I don't like this.

~ For some reason, Ariana Grande and her team thinks it's a good idea to already release the lead single for her NEXT album even though Sweetener was practically just released. Bad move, Ariana. It's just going to her overexposure, even worse than Imagine Dragons. As far as Thank U, Next goes, I do not like this song. This is the worst song she has put out this year. I like what she was going for lyrically, but musically it just did not work. The song is just boring. Her vocals are underwhelming. She is a much better singer than this. The way she drops the f-bomb in the chorus is very awkward and unnecessary. This song is just not good at all and it'll probably kill Breathin's momentum, which is infuriating.

Top 5 Hit-Bound Picks
1. Olly Murs – Moves
2. Little Mix/Nicki Minaj – Woman Like Me
3. Camila Cabello – Consequences
4. Ellie Goulding/Diplo – Close To Me
5. Shawn Mendes – Nervous

Blurbier
~ We have a new #1 this week in the form of Happier by Marshmello and Bastille! This is easily Marshmello's best mainstream hit after the mediocre Wolves and the terrible Friends. Bastille kind of stole the show though. And Marshmello's best song is still Ritual. But I really enjoy Happier and I'm glad this is the song that managed to hit #1.

~ lovelytheband – Broken is now in the Top 10. It could potentially make the Hits 1 year-end list, which I would be all for. I certainly did not expect this song to do this well when it debuted on Hit-Bound. I also didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I do. But this is a great song and I'm happy to see it having success even though it feels like a Foster The People song.

~ Calvin Harris/Sam Smith – Promises is up in the Top 20. This song has kind of grown on me. I kinda like Sam Smith's vocals a little bit more now, but not enough for me to put the song in green. The female voice is still pretty annoying. But I guess it's growing on me.

~ Also in the Top 20 we have Free Free Free by Pitbull. I'm calling it right now that this song is not sticking around into 2019. I can't even imagine people voting for this song because of its irrelevancy.

~ The Struts/Kesha – Body Talks made a nice second-week jump up to #22. I'm praying to the gods of this countdown that they actually let this be a hit because it is just amazing. Shame on the public for not letting it be a hit everywhere else. It deserves its shot here.

~ After strong longevity, it looks like Selena Gomez – Back To You might be on its way out soon. I'm very impressed and pleased with how this song did considering that it's one of Selena Gomez's best songs, as well as her best solo single since Come & Get It.

~ For some reason, Eastside dropped on its second week. I actually really enjoy this song now, though mostly because it's the far superior Halsey track currently on the countdown. I'm hoping this does well and I would like if it did better than Without Me, though that most likely will not be the case.

~ Kim Petras – Heart To Break and George Ezra – Shotgun took some hard falls this week. I never cared too much about Shotgun. It could leave next week and I probably won't care. But Heart To Break is a very good song that deserved better. She just has such a great voice.

~ As far as the exits go, No Tears Left To Cry was very overrated. The song was decent, but didn't deserve as much praise as it got. So I'm glad to see it off. We also got rid of a huge piece of shit by the name of Happy Now by Zedd and Elley Duhé. I'm so glad this is finally gone. Zedd is much better than this and I just could not stand Elley Duhé's autotuned voice. So yeah. We can now celebrate the song's departure.

~ As a little bonus blurb, I thought I'd talk about some new music to check out. Imagine Dragons released Origins and I don't recommend it unless you liked Evolve. Muse released Simulation Theory and I actually enjoyed that album overall as a fan of Muse. I have my favorite track as the #1 recommendation for Hits 1 even though it'll probably never get picked up. Also, they released Kelly Clarkson's cover of Never Enough from The Greatest Showman. I loved the original and I thought Kelly Clarkson did a fantastic job with the cover. I highly recommend it.

  6. Great post.

I have almost the exact opposite opinions as you on Expectations. I actually kinda like her voice, but I do not like the production at all, and the guitar in the bridge sounds like literal earrape.

  8. Lately, I've been, I've been thinking
I want you to be happier, I want you to be happier

    When the morning comes
When we see what we've become
In the cold light of day we're a flame in the wind
Not the fire that we've begun
Every argument, every word we can't take back
'Cause with all that has happened
I think that we both know the way that the story ends

    Then only for a minute
I want to change my mind
'Cause this just don't feel right to me
I want to raise your spirits
I want to see you smile but
Know that means I'll have to leave

Know that means I'll have to leave
Lately, I've been, I've been thinking
I want you to be happier, I want you to be happier

    When the evening falls
And I'm left there with my thoughts
And the image of you being with someone else
Well, it's eating me up inside
But we ran our course, we pretended we're okay
Now if we jump together at least we can swim
Far away from the wreck we made

    Then only for a minute
I want to change my mind
'Cause this just don't feel right to me
I want to raise your spirits
I want to see you smile but
Know that means I'll have to leave

Know that means I'll have to leave
Lately, I've been, I've been thinking
I want you to be happier, I want you to be happier

    So I'll go, I'll go
    I will go, go, go
    So I'll go, I'll go
    I will go, go, go

Lately, I've been, I've been thinking
I want you to be happier, I want you to be happier
Even though I might not like this
I think that you'll be happier, I want you to be happier

    Then only for a minute
I want to change my mind
'Cause this just don't feel right to me
I want to raise your spirits
I want to see you smile but
Know that means I'll have to leave

Know that means I'll have to leave
Lately, I've been, I've been thinking
I want you to be happier, I want you to be happier

    So I'll go, I'll go
    I will go, go, go

  22. I have put together my list of my Top 20 Songs of 2018! I always do this mid-November so it was time! I loved music this year so this was a really difficult list to make. Here it is. Btw, I had Havana- Camila Cabello on last years list so I did not include it this year.

    Honorable Mentions:
Meant To Be by Bebe Rexha & Florida Georgia Line
Finesse by Bruno Mars ft. Cardi B
    Simple by Florida Georgia Line
    God's Plan by Drake
    Be Careful by Cardi B
    Boo'd Up by Ella Mai

20: If We Have Each Other by Alec Benjamin
The lyrics and Alec's voice are both incredible. My sister was away for four months and it was the longest we had ever been apart. This song brought me to tears the first time I heard it.

    19) Jump by Julia Michaels ft. Trippie Redd
Not her best song to date (her best is Worst In Me), but still an incredible song. I have always loved her voice, and yes I know I am in the minority.

    18) Perfect by Topic & Ally Brooke
The first song released by Fifth Harmony member Ally Brooke and it does not disappoint. Great lyrics, composition, and vocals.

    17) Summer On You by PRETTYMUCH
I still don't really know why I love this song as much as I do. Probably because it sounds like an Ed Sheeran song and he did write it. I love the laid back summery vibe.

    16) Downtown's Dead by Sam Hunt
Anybody realize that I seem to love songs critics hate? Haha! I see why this song flopped, but honestly it shouldn't have. Totally underrated.

    15) Sober by Demi Lovato
The most emotional song of the year. I bawled the first time I heard it. And after Demi overdosed and went to rehab the song has even more weight.

    14) Happier by Marshmello & Bastille
I love dance and alternative coming together. Bastille sound great here. I predict this will be number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 within the next few weeks.

    13) Let You Down by NF
I have become a big fan of NF this year. This song was a great breakout hit for him. I just love it.

    12) In My Feelings by Drake
This is possibly Drake best song yet. He has been on fire this year! Every second of this song is perfection. And to think it wasn't even supposed to be a single.

    11) Love Lies by Khalid & Normani
I remember when it was announced Khalid & Normani had a song coming out together I freaked out! I love Khalid's voice and I loved Normani from Fifth Harmony. It is also a plus this song is from Love Simon, my favorite movie of the year.

    ReplyDelete
  23. 10) Psycho by Post Malone ft. Ty Dolla $ign
If you would have told me a year ago I would be a giant Post Malone fan I would have laughed in your face. I used to hate this guy. Though I would have put the entire Beerbongs and Bentley's album on here if I could I will settle for Psycho.

    9) No Tears Left To Cry by Ariana Grande
I didn't know what to expect from Ariana following the terrorist attack at her concert last year. I didn't know if I wanted her to address it through song or not. This was the perfect song to release following the tragedy. Plus, sonically, it fit in perfect in a year full of hip-hop dominators.

    8) Marry Me by Thomas Rhett
Every year I latch onto a country song or two and obsess over it. I listed to a lot of country this year and this track always stood out. I still think Top 40 should have gotten on board with this track. The lyrics are painful and Thomas's vocals stun. But it is still not the best country song of the year. More on that later.

    7) High Hopes by Panic! At The Disco
I can't believe how popular this song has gotten. Hit's 1 has always played every Panic! song they can get their hands on weather it was a hit or not, so I didn't think this one would be any different. But to see this song in the top 10 on pop radio and and almost in the top 10 on the Hot 100 shows this song is a gem and I couldn't be more happier.

    6) Everyday by Logic & Marshmello
I love this song. I love chanting "I work hard every motherfucking day" at the top of my lungs everytime this song is on. It's probably the most fun song of the year. It should have been bigger than it was. Totally underrated.

    5) Heaven by Kane Brown
Kane Brown has risen to the top of my favorite country artists right now. There is just something about his voice I love. This is by far the best country song of the year! Also, he just released a new album last Friday! Go check it out!

    4) I Like It by Cardi B, Bad Bunny, & J Balvin
You can't have a list of the best songs of 2018 without mentioning Cardi B somewhere. She dominated everything this year and shows no signs of slowing down. This song is pure fire. I love that Latin music has made it's way to the American radio!

    3) Never Be The Same by Camila Cabello
I can't believe how huge Camila Cabello has become this past year. Aside from Cardi B, she has dominated 2018. Camila's voice in this song is absolutely insane. Her range is amazing. Plus, the remix with Kane Brown is to die for. Now let's see Consequences become another smash for her!

    2) The Middle by Zedd, Maren Morris, & Grey
I know, I know. Most of you guys hate this song. I have never understood why though. Maren Morris is one of my personal favorite artists, so to see her on a pop song with Zedd and Grey and have a #1 radio hit and top 10 song on the Hot 100 was incredible. This song is so much fun to sing along and dance to. But still with how much I love this song, it wasn't even close to the number 1 spot.

And my number 1 favorite song of 2018 is.....

    1) Drew Barrymore by Bryce Vine
Ok. Bare with me on this one. I know this song kinda sucks. I know the lyrics are corny and it is kind of a nothing song. I also know I LOVE IT! I still don't know what it is about this song that made me fall in love with it. Bryce has a unique voice, something I have never heard before.

Take a ride to my old neighborhood
I just wanna go back, sing, "hit me, baby, one more time"
    Wanna go back, wanna go
Yeah, I just wanna go back
    Nike Airs, all that
    CD, old Mercedes
Drive 'round listening to Shady like, oh
    Never under pressure, oh
Those days it was so much better, oh
Feelin' cool in my youth, relaxin'
    No money, no problem
    It was easy back then
Ooh, wish that we could go back in time, uh
    Got memories
Ooh, maybe we can do it tonight
    Tonight's the night
I just wanna go back, back to 1999
Take a ride to my old neighborhood
I just wanna go back, sing, "hit me, baby, one more time"
    Wanna go back, wanna go
    Yeah, I remember back home
Best friends, all night, no phone
No cares, I was dumb and so young
My room singing Michael Jackson (hee, hee)
Never under pressure, oh, those days it was so much better
    Feelin' cool in my youth
I'm askin', "Does anyone remember how we did it back then?"

I just wanna go back, sing, "hit me, baby, one more time"
    Wanna go back, wanna go
Back to where we came from, playin' air guitar on the roof
In the kitchen, up on the table
Like we had a beautiful view
    I wanna go
I just wanna go back, back to 1999
    Ah
    Back to 1999
I know those days are over but a boy can fantasize
'Bout JTT on MTV and when I close my eyes
And I'm right there, right there
And he's right there, right there
And we're right there, right there
Ah, ah, ah, I wanna go back
I just wanna go back, back to 1999
