Zedd (5) – Week Of April 7, 2018

Hey guys. I realize that this post is out later than usual. But as you guys may or may not know, I am a college student. So I have to prioritize and school is more important than this, since blogging is really just a hobby that I do on the side. Don't get me wrong, I love doing it. But it's not something I'm dedicating my life to. I have other things going on that are more important. Most of you are very understanding of that and are very patient. So I thank you for that. But there are a few people including anonymous users that like to rush me in the comment section, which I find to be annoying and rude. Please understand that I have a life outside of here and if a post ends up not coming out at all, it's not because I don't want to do it. It's simply because I can't. Sometimes I see a comment that goes something like, "Someone please call Adrian's parents and have them tell Adrian to update the countdown." I genuinely hate this comment. It sounds stupid to me because none of my family members know that I do this. This is literally my own thing that I kind of just keep to myself. I post when I can. So please stop commenting this bullshit. I've turned off anonymous commenting, so hopefully that will help since there have been other issues before with anonymous users in the comment section. My apologies to the anonymous users that comment responsibly. You can comment again if you create a Google account, which is not that hard. But yeah, I just wanted to talk about that. It's been an issue that needed to be addressed. Thank you to those that are patient with me. You guys are the reason I still do this. Before we get to this week's Fresh 45, here are the songs we're saying goodbye to this week.

New Entrants
~ This week we have the return of Rudimental, whose music I have enjoyed in the past. Feel The Love, as repetitive as it was, I still really liked. Their collaboration with Ed Sheeran, titled Lay It All On Me, was really good as well. They're more popular in the U.K. with a couple of songs crossing over into the U.S. such as the ones I mentioned and this new one, titled These Days. The track features Jess Glynne, who we all remember from Clean Bandit's Rather Be. I really like her contribution here. I think she has a great voice. We also have Dan Caplen and Macklemore, and I think they both did a nice job on the song as well. This doesn't exactly top their previous work in terms of the production. I do like the piano, but the rest doesn't stand out all too much. That's not to say that it's bad. It's good, but not something that I'll really remember in the long run. Maybe that'll change with time and more listens. Overall, I think the song is good and hopefully it does decent here.

~ Next we have Alice Merton with her debut single, No Roots. I never really liked this song. I thought it was kind of odd at first and it never really grew on me unfortunately. I can definitely see why people like this and it's not a bad song by any means. It's just not my cup of tea. I don't like her voice. I get that it's unique, but it's kind of annoying in my opinion. That being said, I don't like the way the song opens up with just her voice and the bass. The production is underwhelming for the most part, especially in the chorus. I can tell she tried to do something "epic" at the three minute mark. But it just sounds weird and out of place. The song is extremely repetitive. There's virtually nothing interesting about it in my opinion. Like I said, I can see why people like this. But this is one of those songs that I just dislike for personal reasons, not because it's necessarily a bad song. So please do not argue with me about this. One interesting fact I want to mention is that the song is over a year old. It was released towards the end of 2016 and it's just now getting popular, which I find odd. But whatever. The EP didn't come out in the U.S. until just recently.

Best Debut of the Week: Rudimental/Jess Glynne/Macklemore/Dan Caplen – These Days

Hit-Bound
~ Here is the Hit-Bound list.

  • Sam Smith/Logic – Pray (DEBUT)
  • Dua Lipa – IDGAF
  • Hundred Handed – Too Good (DEBUT)
  • Kendrick Lamar, SZA – All The Stars
  • Foster The People – Sit Next To Me
  • Halsey – Alone
  • Dustin Atlas/Erin Bowman – Fake Friends
  • Maren Morris – Rich
  • Post Malone/Ty Dolla $ign – Psycho
  • The Chainsmokers – Everybody Hates Me
  • Echosmith – Over My Head
  • Why Don't We – Trust Fund Baby
  • Portugal. The Man – Live In The Moment

~ I like Sam Smith and I think he has a great voice that can convey emotion. He definitely shows that on Pray. I think the song is very nice and enjoyable. Though it's nothing too far off from what he's done before. But I do like the addition of Logic to give it a little something extra.

~ Too Good is pretty catchy. I like the groove and the throwback vibe. I've only listened to it once. So I may have more to say after I give it a few more listens.

~ Last week I had Sit Next To Me as the best song on Hit-Bound because there really weren't that many good songs. I didn't love any of them. So I kinda just picked it at random. This past week I really grew to love All The Stars, so I thought for sure that it would be the new best song on Hit-Bound. But at the same time, I was listening to Sit Next To Me a lot and really grew to love that one too, even more than Pumped Up Kicks. So I just decided to have both songs as the best because I can't really pick one. Hopefully they each make their debuts soon, especially Sit Next To Me because Foster The People deserve another hit.

Top 5 Hit-Bound Picks
1. Foster The People – Sit Next To Me
2. Kendrick Lamar/SZA – All The Stars
3. Portugal. The Man – Live In The Moment
4. Sam Smith/Logic – Pray
5. Halsey – Alone

These Blurbs
~ For the sake of time, blurbs will be a little shorter. Though it's not like much even happened anyway. Want You Back is in the Top 5, which is about as surprising as the fact that fire is hot. Kesha is in the Top 10, which is always good news. We also have Niall and The Weeknd, both of which have good songs. So it's nice to see them in the Top 10.

~ Bad Wolves – Zombie made a nice jump into the Top 15 this week. I'm glad Hits 1 is treating this song well. Hopefully it keeps it up. We have two more new songs in the Top 20. Friends I've had a love/hate relationship with. It's catchy and I like the production to some extent. But Anne-Marie's voice is kind of annoying and I hate the whole friend-zoning theme. I get it if you don't want to be in a relationship with a close friend. But there's no need to be rude to someone who took a chance for love. It's hard to believe this is the same singer from Rockabye. And Delicate is just boring. It's closer to red than it is to green.

~ We've officially hit the one-year anniversary of Lights Down Low being on the countdown. It's funny because when it debuted, I said I hoped that it would last on the countdown as long as it did on Hit-Bound. It definitely went above and beyond. It's very interesting to see this song last a year without ever reaching the Top 5. I'm curious to see how much longer it lasts seeing that it's pretty much locked on to appear in Hits 1's Top 45 of 2018.

~ Perfect is out of the Top 10 for the first time in seemingly forever. Done For Me dropped out of the Top 30 for some reason. Hold Me Tight Or Don't took an unexpected drop. And Lonely Girl is somehow still here despite not doing very much.

~ As far as the exits go, New Rules dropped out despite still being popular because this is Hits 1 and they do shit like this more often than they should. All Falls Down leaving is kind of disappointing since I really liked that one. But it wasn't actually popular unfortunately. At least it spent a little while on here.

~ In other music news, Cardi B released her new album, Invasion of Privacy. I've only listened to a few track previews. But it doesn't seem that impressive. This comes as no surprised after the bland as hell Bodak Yellow and the shitty Bartier Cardi. Thirty Seconds To Mars also released AMERICA, which is also not good. On top of the terrible album cover, there are very few songs that actually grabbed my attention, those being Walk On Water and Remedy. Everything else is either okay at best or just bad. Feel free to watch this album review, which pretty much sums up my own thoughts.

  1. I saw No Roots on a car commercial not too long ago. If that is what it'll take to get No Roots popular like other indie/alt/rock songs to get popular is through commercials I am all for it, because No Roots is a great song.

Yes to that Throwback pick, Smooth is by far one of the best songs of all time, it deserves all the lover it gets.

    1. A certain Pulse user will really agree with you on that first one.

Anyway, I think Nice For What, Stir Fry, Broken Halos, Burn The House Down, Freaky Friday, and Ric Flair Drip (yes I actually like this song) should debut. All good songs.

    2. I would like it see Ric Flair Drip, Stir Fry, One Kiss, and She Loves Control debut (even though the first 2 are highly unlikely to). The rest I’ve never heard or don’t like.

      Delete
    3. Pretty much the only reason I don't like Hits 1 that much, it's too generic and is mostly just pop, EDM, and alternative, it's not as diverse as it should be.

  7. Guys, may I please have your attention, Fall Out Boy are releasing their next single called, l “The Last of the Real Ones.” If you guys haven’t heard that song, it’s okay. Just stay tuned and it will impact alternative radio May 1.

    7. You don’t like Camila Cabello at all do you?

    8. He probably just hates both songs because he thinks they’re “old”.

I’m personally not a fan of her and her voice. I liked Havana because she seemed a little laid back with the vocals and I liked the vibe. But on Never Be The Same, I feel like she’s trying too hard to sound good and it just doesn’t work for me. The song reminded me of why I disliked her in the first place.

      Delete
    9. Same. It's her voice that's mostly the problem, but the overuse drums and sultry as Hell vibes definitely don't help either.

    10. I love Camila Cabello, she's talented.

    3. Finesse is a 90s throwback nee nee swing anthem, that's why it's so good. Meant To Be is a shitty pop country trap song with awful vocals terrible pop and country cliches, and some of the worst genre blending production I've heard all year. God's Plan is has better production, and lyrics than most other trap songs and because I like it.

I get you too young to understand anything about good music like Finesse or anything aboau 80s and 90s music that happane to be good, but seriously WAMB, educate yourself for once. And seriously what's so good about Finesse, have you actually listened to it or are you just judging a song for Bo reason other than the artists themselves and not the actual quality of said song?

      Delete
    4. @Miles Tbh I'm the same as WAMB10 except i love Finesse.

      Delete
    5. No she fucking doesn't! That's your problem, you blindly hate a song for little to no reason other than the artist. She doesn't even do much, she provides a short intro verse and backing vocals for the bridge and outro, and yet that ruins the song!? Ummm, no!

    7. Where did Call Out My Name land anyway?

      Delete
    8. IDK where it is this week, I guess we'll have to find out tomorrow when the full chart is revealed. All I know is it debuted in the top 5 at #4, but my guess is that it fell hard, probably out of the top 20.

    9. So, do we think it's gonna stick at #1? Hopefully this will keep God's Plan from reaching the record.

      Delete
    10. If it holds on streaming, sales and gains big on radio while God's Plan starts to shrink in all categories I could see it holding. Hopefully it stays because I prefer this over Meant To Be.

    12. He has had the capability of having every single song debut on the Hot 100 before. We've seen it with Views and More Life, and honestly with how good God's Plan and Nice For What are I do have some hope that the album is better than his last couple albums.

    4. Let Me and I Wanna Know will definitely debut this week because they have both been aired as ear popping music.

  19. Also Montavis, your Braves are about to face my Phillies, who have been starting to regain momentum. The last time they were particularly good was 2011 when they won their division, not expecting them to win another World Series anytime soon but hopefully this can be the season they start to head back in the right direction.

As for the Sixers, they'll be in Round 2 of the playoffs very shortly. Am excited for that!

    1. Well, if the 76ers somehow manage to win it all this year, then your city will probably have the best year in sports.

I guess the Eagles winning the Super Bowl and Villanova with the NCAA Championship might've been a sign of what's to come for the city.

    3. Heh, to bet on them winning it all this year, that'd be pushing it, but I wouldn't rule it out entirely. I mean, currently Round 2 against the Heat isn't looking very good, but we are ahead 1-0 so far. If this isn't our year, they look to be championship contenders next year for sure. I've lived to see two of the big Philly teams win it all (Phillies in '08 and Eagles this year, three if you count Villanova), so hopefully in time we'll live to see the Sixers take it.

Also, you probably already know this, but for the 2018-19 season, the Falcons will be hosting the Super Bowl in their stadium. If my Eagles can't repeat, I think that'd be the next best thing, for them to be the first team to play a Super Bowl in their home stadium. If they could win it there, that'd be the best redemption ever.

Chase: Then why do we watch them? Haha.

Anyway, God's Plan > Nice For What. But I have a feeling that Drake will replace himself again next week. Idk why.

    6. Dylan: I can say now that I haven't listened to either Stir Fry, Love Lies, Sky Walker, or Sick Boy, although if I would have, I could have potentially added more points and/or named Never Be the Same the worst song on NOW 66. I'm making it a rule of sorts not to give any points to songs you haven't listened to. However, thank you for the suggestions and I'll see if I can listen to them on MUCH sometime soon.

      Delete
    7. Zack: What are you talking about, he's not gonna just randomly rank the album, and no offense but ranking one song as -1 and 6, defeats the purpose as they cancel each other out. Either have one song be -1 or one be 6, but never both, it's counter-intuitive.

And Stir Fry is great I don't know what you're one if you think it's the worst and don't jsut tell me because it's Migos and that it's a rap trio or any BS liek that.

    10. I don't even like B&B, I don't even listen to iHeart radio station! What kind of fucking drugs are you taking?!

      Delete
    11. Not every single rap song is awful like Bad and Boujee. Every now and then, these below average rappers tend to release something that’s actually tolerable and maybe even enjoyable. It’s rare, but it does happen.

And it doesn’t seem right to just give songs you haven’t heard a zero because that affects the overall score and makes it look like you just hate those songs. You should just not include them in the ranking.

And no, I’m not spoiling anything because I wasn’t planning on ranking this.

      Delete
    12. Adrian is right. I still don't like a huge chunk of the rap and trap that does manage to get popular from the likes of XXXTentacleHentai, 69, Kodak Black and others. But then again, artists liek Drake, Migos, Cardi B, Nicki Minaj, and Rae Sremmurd are capable of releasing good music.

Hell we saw artists who I typically don't like last year released a bunch of good songs. Rae Sremmurd had Black Beatles, Charlie Puth had Attention, Shawn Mendes had There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back, Camila Cabello had Havana, both French Montana and Swae Lee of Rae Sremmurd had Unforgettable, and the best thing of all was producer Mike Will Made It produced some of the best rap songs of the year. HUMBLE, DNA, Black Beatles are some of his best work. Hell, even Powerglide by Rae Sremmurd and Juicy J is produced great by him.

Judging a song negatively because it's a rap song without actually hearing it is unfair, and I would hope you'd figure that out.

      Delete
    13. Black Beatles and Unforgettable were two great examples. Both songs I really enjoyed. I don’t hate every rap song. But I still give everyone a chance because it is possible for them to surprise me. Even the artists that I tend to dislike I still listen to to see if they’ve stepped things up. I don’t immediately judge a song based on the genre or the artist alone.

    2. Once again you are over-saturating the use of the -1, making it ridiculously stupid. And I seriously doubt you know half of the songs in the top 20 anyway, again your opinion is invalid.

    3. I don't think I'm using it for my intended purpose, but yes, I rarely heard most of these songs. I will spy over Hits 1's top 20s now and then, though.

      Delete
    4. So then why even rank them if you haven't heard them at all, it just makes you seem overly negative and honestly it's fucking stupid. 20-13 all being the worst is all fucking stupid, it';s worse if you haven't even heard any of them are are just judging them for no reason whatsoever.

      Delete
    5. What can I say except both Adrian and myself hate rap.

      Delete
    6. But that's the problem, you can't just hate rap for no reason and give all of them -1's it's quite literally unfair. I hate a lot of rap, but not all of it in it's current state is all that bad, and your stubborn attitude towards the genre as a whole is going too far. It's one thing to not like a genre, but if you have not heard the songs and group them all as bad without actually knowing about the song itself, that's just judgmental and downright stereotypical. I know Adrian doesn't like rap, but I'm 100% certain that he would not be this harsh or unfair like you are being.

      Delete
    7. I listen to all songs before I judge them. This includes rap. It deserves a fair chance just like every other genre. Who knows? Maybe I’ll actually like it.

    8. I agree with both of you. I mean, I hate trap music, too, but I wouldn't give eight different songs a tie for the worst song on the chart. I can see why, but you should just use a 0 for them next time.

    1. I've read your review. I haven't heard much of 30 Seconds to Mars since iHeart and Cumulus stations were playing Walk on Water, but if the rest of the album (except for Walk on Water, Dangerous Night, and Love is Madness) is crap, I am most certainly not listening. So, thank you for letting me know. I also voted and want you to do more pop-related stuff, but I could also add these selections to your poll:
      -AT40 CHR Chart
      -AT40 Hot AC Chart
      -iHeartRadio Family Top 40
      -Radio Disney Top 30
      -iHeartRadio Top 20

    2. 1. Not interested in any of these but thanks for suggesting them anyway :)

      2. Already doing the AT40 CHR chart. It is just on hiatus until the summer.

  28. Hits 1 has just updated their voting poll. Only one new song is added to the list. Here it is:

    Personal by HRVY

Yes, this one has been trending on the YouTube 15 for sometime now. Once again, Hits 1 loves to pick up on unknown artists we don't hear elsewhere.

    1. YES!!!! This has grown on me a whole lot since I first reviewed it.

Also, didn't this also happen with New Rules where it was trending on the YT15 then went to Hit-Bound?

      Delete
    2. As well as some other songs such as Havana, Don't Let Me Down, and a few others I won't mention.

Though, I can't really envision it being a hit unlike some of the other songs. But you never know for sure. It might pull a New Rules, or it'll just fade away quickly.

      Delete
    3. Nope, it didn’t also happen with New Rules. Everyone knew who Dua Lipa was at that time, but who the hell are HRVY?

      Delete
    4. Speaking of New Rules, they removed that song on the voting list.

    5. Also, New Rules left the countdown a while ago.

      3: G-Eazy featuring Halsey - Him and I
2: Justin Timberlake featuring Chris Stapleton - Say Something

6: Best Song on the List:
1: Imagine Dragons - Whatever It Takes

      Overall Score: 64/145=44.137931% (C-)

      Delete
    2. Your score is probably so low because of how many zeros you just give out to songs you haven’t heard. Again, this makes you look very negative and harsh. Either listen to them, which isn’t hard, or just don’t include them in the ranking.

      Delete
    3. If you take all of them out, Adrian, you get 49/90=54.4% (C+).

      Delete
    4. Or just give them 2s instead. But what Adrian said, it makes you come off as being negative and harsh and if you haventh even heard some of them why are you giving them 0s? Also why must you always give out a -1 and 6, those counteract one another and are completely pointless. Either get rid of the 6 or -1 because you can't have both.

      Delete
    5. The -1 and 6 came from the fact that I think a comment I made a few years back led us to adding deductions and/or bonus points for worst and/or best songs - or in some cases, them hitting #1. However, there would be no -1 if there were no songs between 0 and 2 points and no 6 if there were no songs between 3 and 5 points. I subtract another point if the worst song is at #1 and add another point if the best song is at #1.

      Delete
    6. Sorry, but that is just fucking stupid! Why give a song a -1 just because there are songs that ranges between 0 and 2 and a 6 if there are songs between 3 and 5? It's entirely pointless, just use a standard 0-5, no need in adding a -1 and a 6 to everything. And for God's sake don't put everything you never heard as a 0.

      Delete
    7. You could leave the songs you've never heard out as well.

      Delete
    8. Miles couldn’t have said this any better.

      Delete
    9. The reason I don’t have -1 is because that cancels with the 6. If I had both, it would be the same as if I had neither. Do you understand that? It defeats the purpose of the extra sixth point.

  37. So the full NFL schedule hasn't released just yet, but there have been some leaks, and apparently the Eagles will be facing the Falcons in the season opener, contrary to the predictions that they'd be facing the Vikings. (source: https://twitter.com/Jeff_McLane/status/987043157362737153)

Well Montavis, looks like the season will be opening with them seeking revenge for the Divisional Playoffs. Wonder if they will get it or if it'll be the Super Bowl LI rematch all over again?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. As a fan of the Falcons, I'm always looking for revenge. I'm hoping they win it this time, and not flunk like they did against the Patriots last year.

I'm also hoping we're at our best so that we can host the Super Bowl in our city.

      Delete
    2. Very true. Last year was our year. And if this year can't be our year again, I do think that the Falcons being the first team to play a Super Bowl in their home stadium would be the next best thing. The Vikings came close last year, but alas proceeded to flunk big time against us.

Also, fun fact, their stadium has a Chick-Fil-A that, despite being in a place that its main purpose is done on Sundays, is still closed on that day. Yet they do have other things the stadium is used for, like the occasional concert, including Taylor Swift come August. For that matter, Lincoln Financial Field is where she'll be performing come July, unlike Bruno Mars who performed in the Wells Fargo Center where the Sixers and Flyers play.
