Justin Timberlake (7) – Week Of August 6, 2016

So I just watched the new movie Suicide Squad. Overall, it's weird. But the good kind of weird. It wasn't amazing or anything and I thought the beginning was a little slow. But overall, I enjoyed it. New Entrants
~ I've been quite scared of new AJR music after the atrocious piece of trash called I'm Ready from 2014. That would've seriously been the worst song of the year if All About That Bass hadn't swooped in. To say the least, I'm Not Famous is not as horrific as I'm Ready. But it's still flavorless, generic, and just boring. I find the production to be a little underwhelming. But then again, I do have really low expectations for this group. Overall, I'm not really feeling this song. It's in blue now, but it's closer to red than it is to green. So don't be surprised if it changes to red sometime in the future.

~ The song that I'm hoping will get Dangerous Woman out of the Top 10 has arrived! From Ariana Grande, it is Into You. As much as I don't like her as a person, she is definitely talented. Into You is definitely one of the better songs on her new album. I don't love it now as much as I did at the first few listens. But it's still good. However, I still don't think this tops singles from My Everything like Problem and Love Me Harder, with the latter probably being my favorite song from her. But let's put it this way, it is definitely better than The Way. Overall, I do think Into You is a really catchy song. The production was done very nicely and she really did showcase her voice a lot better in this song than in Dangerous Woman. I can't really see myself sticking to this song if Hits 1 overplays it, which they probably will. So we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Hit-Bound
~ Here is the Hit-Bound list:

  • Coldplay/Beyoncé – Hymn For The Weekend
  • Steve Aoki & Boehm/Walk The Moon – Back 2 U
  • Katy Perry – Rise
  • Ben Rector – Brand New
  • Twenty One Pilots – Heathens
  • The Chainsmokers/Halsey – Closer
  • Andy Grammer – Fresh Eyes
  • Magic! – Red Dress
  • Fifth Harmony – All In My Head (Flex)
  • The Strumbellas – Spirits
  • Flume/Kai – Never Be Like You
  • Troye Sivan/Alessia Cara – Wild
  • MKTO – Superstitious
  • Kenny Chesney/P!nk – Setting The World On Fire

~ It's nice when Hits 1 picks up on other genres like country. They bring Setting The World On Fire by Kenny Chesney featuring P!nk (?). P!nk was interesting choice since she's not a country artist. But her voice slays anything. So overall, I like it.

~ The Chainsmokers continue to dominate this year, now with Halsey on the track Closer, which I personally love. Halsey has a really good voice as shown in her previous countdown song, New Americana, which I also loved. I would really like to see this song debut the countdown soon.

Top 5 Hit-Bound
1. Coldplay – Hymn For The Weekend
2. MKTO – Superstitious
3. The Chainsmokers/Halsey – Closer
4. Troye Sivan/Alessia Cara – Wild
5. Steve Aoki & Boehm/Walk The Moon – Back 2 U

YouTube15
~ I haven't done a YouTube15 review in a little while, so I'll just do one for this week's edition.

~ Here is the YouTube15 list:

  • Major Lazer/Justin Bieber/MØ – Cold Water
  • Sophia Grace/Silento – Girl In The Mirror
  • Martin Garrix/Bebe Rexha – In The Name Of Love
  • Meghan Trainor – Me Too
  • Clean Bandit/Louisa Johnson – Tears
  • Desiigner – Panda
  • Jacob Sartorious – Hit Or Miss
  • Calvin Harris/Rihanna – This Is What You Came For
  • Hey Violet – Brand New Moves
  • Shawn Mendes – Treat You Better
  • Jonas Blue/JP Cooper – Perfect Strangers
  • Beyoncé – Sorry
  • Florida Georgia Line – H.O.L.Y.
  • Fifth Harmony – Work From Home
  • Sigala/Blonde – Don't Need No Money

~ As you can tell, I have very mixed opinions on the YouTube15 this week.

~ What the hell is Desiigner – Panda still doing here?!?! I find it absolutely mind-boggling that people actually like this utter piece of shit. How is it still trending?!?!?! Outside of Hits 1, this is without a doubt the worst song of the year. I'm extremely disappointed and quite annoyed that this is what hip-hop/rap has come to.

~ Sofia Grace/Silento – Girl In The Mirror and Hey Violet – Brand New Moves are both really annoying mainly because of the vocals. But the production for Girl In The Mirror is pretty bad as well.

~ I still don't like Beyoncé's solo music. She is way too overrated and her new album, Lemonade, isn't even good. There's maybe like one or two song that were okay. But the album overall was just not good and yet again, it's another overrated album from this woman.

~ When will Jacob Sartorious get it in his freakin' head that he can't sing! Not even autotune can save his voice. The fact that Sweatshirt has over one million dislikes on YouTube just shows that people agree. Hit Or Miss really isn't any better because now he thinks he can rap, which he can't. The production is cringe-worthy as well. Seriously, where are this kid's parents?

~ Don't Need No Money is definitely than other songs I've heard from Sigala. *cough* Easy Love *cough*. But it still isn't that interesting.

~ Some of the songs here are also on the Weekend Countdown, so I'm sure you know how I feel about those.

~ In The Name Of Love is definitely a different sound for Martin Garrix. I like how Martin always experiments with new sounds. In The Name Of Love is actually pretty catchy. It's certainly not his best. But I do like it.

~ H.O.L.Y. is also a different sound for Florida Georgia Line. I've heard quite a few songs from from boring, generic country artists. But Florida Georgia Line are not one of them. Cruise was my jam back in 2014 and I even liked other songs from their album at the time like Get Your Shine On. But I actually really like H.O.L.Y.. These guys have really good voices and that does show in this song. It's different than your typical country song and I think that's why I really like it.

~ Cold Water would've been a better way to end the show with Panda or Hit Or Miss starting the show. Being one of the few good songs in this list, I didn't find it a very hard decision as to whether or not this would be crowned best song on the list. Justin Bieber really has a top notch voice.

Top 5 YouTube15 Picks
1. Major Lazer/Justin Bieber/MØ – Cold Water
2. Florida Georgia Line – H.O.L.Y.
3. Martin Garrix/Bebe Rexha – In The Name Of Love
4. Shawn Mendes – Treat You Better
5. Clean Bandit/Louisa Johnson – Tears

I'm So Into Blurbs
~ The Chainsmokers/Daya – Don't Let Me Down is really the only song in the Top 10 that I want to see at #1. I mean, Just Like Fire would be nice. But that chance is pretty much gone.

~ Adele – Send My Love (To Your New Lover) is now in the Top 10. Great! *sarcasm alert*. Seriously though, this song is only getting more boring after each listen. I miss the Adele from 21 with Set Fire To The Rain, Rumor Has It, etc.

~ Can we please get The Summer Set – Figure Me Out out of this countdown soon? I'm not necessarily okay with it hitting new peaks when they are (some) better songs behind it.

~ I'm also not okay with Twenty One Pilots – Stressed Out being higher than Mike Posner – I Took A Pill In Ibiza. Why is it even still here??? Hits 1 needs to figure out how to let go of Twenty One Pilots songs faster because it is not fair to other artists who frankly, have better songs.

~ All Time Low – Missing You is still getting better with each listen. A peak in the Top 20 would be nice at least.

~ The fact that G-Eazy/Bebe Rexha – Me, Myself, & I is still here just blows my mind. It has spent twice the time in the Bottom 5 of the countdown than it has spent higher up.

~ Exits from songs like No, Hands To Myself, and Kill Em With Kindness are very much needed. Like now!

~ It'd also be nice if Symon – Say and Lukas Graham – Mama Said also dropped and left soon. While the former seems like it'll leave before the latter, I'd like it if both of them left in the near future.

~ I'd appreciate if Fifth Harmony – Work From Home left as well just because the song is getting more and more boring. Plus, I'm really tired of it at this point.

~ It's nice to see James Bay – Let It Go hanging on right now. Funny how when it debuted, I didn't want it to stay long. Now after a few months, I don't want it to leave.

~ The exit from Youth was nice, so I didn't get entirely sick of it yet. And the exit from Pillowtalk was very needed. Thankfully, they did not hold on to this song as long as they have held on to One Direction songs.

~ The Hit 45 Chart for this week is out! Find out if Coldplay can hold at #1 for a third week in a row and a record-breaking twelfth time overall with Hymn For The Weekend!

    4. Right now the song is at least plausible for me. I don't think it's great but I can see the appeal. Andy Grammer makes quite a bit of whitebread stuff though. :P

Chase: That actually is one I'd like to see, sure.

  2. I thoroughly disagree when it comes to Beyoncé. I do believe she has made terrible music before. (Bootyulicious, If I Was A Boy, Check On It, 7/11, Drunk In Love, most of the songs off of her 4, and self-titled albums) But, I do think that her Lemonade album is a big improvement from her self-titled, and Sorry is a good song. And this isn't even the best song from the album, that title belongs to Freedom with Kendrick Lamar. (Come on admit it, Kendrick can save a song) And yet, none of these songs are even Beyoncé's best works (Crazy In Love, Halo, Independent Woman Part 1, Say My Name, Single Ladies, and Irreplaceable) I don't really like it when people call artists like Beyoncé, Rihanna, Katy Perry or Taylor Swift as "overrated" from what I've seen the word over hated is more like it.

  7. I'll have more to talk about when I'm at a computer, but since you mentioned your most hated song outside of the year, for now, allow me to guess what your Bottom 5 is looking like right about now:
    1. Don't Mind
    2. Kamikaze
    3. Work
    4. Hands To Myself
    5. Either Kill 'Em With Kindness, Ride or Same Old Love

Unfortunately, I heard No on the mash-up yesterday. So it looks like that won't be an exit next week.

    15. And I consider songs eligible if they attained a peak on the Hot 100 on the first week of the new year. And considering Hello was #1 for 3 weeks in 2016, makes it eligible to be in my top 5, especially at #1. And yes, I did not let the overplay for this song affect me all that much than most people.

    Always thinking with my head
If I would have listened to my heart I be with you instead
I know you looking for love still
Material things won't make you happy but love will
    L-O-V and add the E
Me and you were had to be
Fairy-tale or tragedy I just hope it ends happily
I been losing my sanity I just hope it comes back to me
I don't know if this lovin' is something good or its bad for me
Oh god it really don't stop
You're like a Ferrari baby and I want a whole lot
Tell me what you think about when I ain't there
You been finding everything but me and baby nothing can compare
    I got that G double O D loving
You been frontin talking like your man was all that
When I know he wasn't girl you bluffin
You looking for love but you love em and you leave em
I would fall for you girl but you keep changing with the seasons
    L-O V-E
Said she's only been in love once
But maybe twice in the cold months
But summers on the way out
And winters on the come up
    L-O-V-E, mmm
    She wants that L-O-V-E, mmm
    She needs L-O-V-E, mmm
She wants that, she needs that love

Yeah whole lotta that like god damn
Got a spot with my name park right there
Make a reservation for us and then plus 10
In case that big heart of yours made broke friends
No I can't buy love but I can buy a lot of shit
And I only carry cash, don't know how to write checks
I got a pretty dumb smile and a bad taste in kicks
But boogie got me right you should check my new fix
I'm a pretty bad attendant cause I would rather watch chick flicks
Reminisce a movie ft a date with the chick lits
Once took a girl to sleep number for the Netflix
Cause I ain't have a bed at the crib just the carpet
Home is where the heart is tell me when to move it
Know I'm doing better now that days in the loose shit
I rather live my dreams with the person in my music
But if you're like nah I mean whatever love it's stupid
Said she's only been in love once
But maybe twice in the cold months
But summers on the way out
And winters on the come up
    L-O-V-E, mmm
    She wants that L-O-V-E, mmm
    She needs L-O-V-E, mmm
She wants that, she needs that love
(Can't buy love, love can't buy love, she needs that love)
Said she's only been in love once
But maybe twice in the cold months
But summers on the way out
And winters on the come up
    L-O-V-E, mmm

      Delete
    4. I'm just gonna say this outright; I think Work is one of the most over-hated songs of 2016.

      Delete
    5. It's just a disappointment to some of us Rihanna fans, who have loved pretty much all her music, that she would go for more of this trap sound that'd you'd probably hear in some trashy rap song. And that chorus is just so annoying.

      Delete
    6. And what's wrong with New Americana?

      Delete
    7. Actually, Work is not trap, or rap. To be honest it doesn't sound like a minimalist rap song. Its actually a dancehall/reggae-pop song, something we haven't seen in 10 years. And admittedly, I actually like maybe more than I should though. I get that the chorus is repetitive, but with the quite impressive dancehall production that I can buy from Rihanna, and she also appropriated the display of West Indian culture without appropriation from the mainstream. (Props to Rihanna and her record team behind her) What really makes this song win me over is the verses. A lot of people seem to only critique the chorus, and forget about the deeper meaning in the verses. Lyrically, Work is "about working for a paycheck no matter what else is going on in your life, it also focuses on a fragile relationship that can be seen in the lines, "If I get another chance to, I would never, oh never, neglect you," which Rihanna sings. To me, this is a great mix of emotion, a good beat, good vocals, a good underlining theme, and it has good credibility as a dance song as well. Easily on of my favorites, but way too easily hated.

      Delete
    8. New Americana is a terribly half-assed song about this generation thinking they're hip. The exaggerated chorus with putting emphasis on words that end in "ana" doesn't help either, and one even said that he considered the "Raised on Biggie and Nirvana" line rivals "Let's Marvin Gaye and get it on" for worst one bar in pop music from 2015. The song may have done okay on the Weekend Countdown, but it flopped on the Hot 100, and I have no complaints about that whatsoever. I'd say more but I'm on my phone right now.

Also, Work From Home is playing in the break room at this moment. Help me x_x

      Delete
    9. Just put some earbuds in, and listen to some Adele.

      Delete
    10. Also, New Americana sounds more like a song someone from the 90s would like, with the line "Raised on Biggie and Nirvana." But I can see why people hate this song, because one of the things I hate is when artists try to do social commentary in their songs, but it just ultimately backfires, and this is no exception.

  20. THE 31 QUESTIONS OF AUGUST

    Question #8:

When it comes to music, which year was the best: 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, or 2016? Explain why.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. For me:

2013, because 3 of my top 10 songs of all-time are from that year (Can't Hold Us, Classic, Best Song Ever). Also, Eminem, my favorite music artist of all-time, had a major album release that year, which was the Marshall Mathers LP2. It doesn't top the LP1, but it's still an amazing album.

      Delete
    2. Haven't been responding to these 31 questions but may as well answer this one:

For me, it's a tough call between 2012 and 2015. The former because it had so many songs that felt unique and different, most notably the two biggest songs of the year, Somebody That I Used To Know and Call Me Maybe (the former of which may honestly be my favorite #1 of the decade so far). Even some of the songs that weren't all that great felt like things we hadn't seen before. It had some pretty solid stuff all-around.

Then the latter just had a lot to like. Even if some of the biggest hits wouldn't go away and became absolutely massive, not to mention Taylor Swift dominating the year, there was still plenty to enjoy hearing, between returns from Justin Bieber and Macklemore, and other cool stuff from The Weeknd, Ariana Grande, DJ Snake, even Pitbull and One Direction, Fall Out Boy, Shut Up and Dance, and of course, Uptown Funk, which managed a well deserved spot on the Greatest of All Time chart. Even some of the hits that weren't high on the Year-End chart were quite solid as well. So yeah, 2015 was another year I'll always remember well.

      Delete
    3. That's a really tough question. To me, I thought 2011, 2012, and 215 were all amazing years, and it'd be very hard to choose.

2011 was a great year because it brought about the R&B revival. After the defective bombshell that was 2010, almost anything would have been an improvement, and 2011 delivered. The #1 song of 2011 was an R&B song led by Adele.

2012 was amazing, mainly due to the explosion of indie-rock and the rising up of songs by many artists. Imagine Dragons with Its Time and Neon Trees Everybody Talks are probably some of the best representatives of the indie-rock boom of 2012. Hell, the #1 song was an indie song in the form of Somebody That I Used To Know.

2015 was probably one of the most diverse years since 2007. The songs like Uptown Funk!, See You Again, The Hills, Hello, King Kunta, Wildest Dreams, etc. The good music turned out to be really good, and the bad stuff turned out to be just outside the top 20 in this case. We had neo-funk, (Uptown Funk!) PR&B (The Hills, and Can't Feel My Face) dream-pop, (Wildest Dreams) Synth-pop, (Love Me Like You Do, Style) Trap, (Lean On and to a lesser extent You Know You Like It) Rap, (every single song off of Kendrick's To Pimp A Butterfly album, and See You Again) Soul/R&B, (Hello, I Know I'm Not The Only One, Lay Me Down) Indie-pop/dance rock, (Shut Up And Dance) EDM, (Where Are U Know, Hey Mama) Alt-rock (Centuries, Uma Thurman, Renegades, Ex's & Oh's) And just pure pop. (Sugar, Fight Song, Blank Space, One Last Time, Heartbeat Song)

  21. This Week in Billboard Chart History: In 1992, Madonna Won Gold Atop the Hot 100

The sports-themed "This Used to Be My Playground" bested all competitors for No. 1. Plus, remembering feats by Stevie Wonder, Richard Marx and Sonny & Cher.

    Aug. 8, 1992
Twenty-four years before the Games in Rio ... Olympic memories: Madonna's "This Used to Be My Playground," from the Olympics-themed 1992 album Barcelona Gold, finished first on the Billboard Hot 100. The song also served as the theme to the baseball movie A League of Their Own, starring Madonna, among others (although it was first released as a stand-alone single, and not on the film's soundtrack, prior to its Barcelona Gold inclusion).

    Aug. 9, 2003
Alan Jackson's "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" began an eight-week reign on Hot Country Songs, the longest of his 26 career No. 1s. His singing and drinking buddy on the track? Jimmy Buffett. (And, did you know that Buffett worked as Billboard's Nashville correspondent in the early '70s? Cheers to us!)

    Aug. 10, 1963
Stevie Wonder's iconic debut single, "Fingertips – Pt 2," tops the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of three weeks. The song became his first of 10 No. 1s, the second-most among solo males. Only Michael Jackson, with 13 as a soloist, notched more Hot 100 leaders.

Richard Marx's "Right Here Waiting" began a three-week command of the Billboard Hot 100. In 2014, Marx celebrated his highest Billboard 200 rank in 20 years, when his latest album, Beautiful Goodbye, debuted at No. 39.

Fifty years ago today: The Lovin' Spoonful's steamy "Summer in the City" was the hottest song on the Billboard Hot 100, burning a path to No. 1 for its first of three weeks on top.

With one of the rock era's sing-along favorites (just find a duet partner …), Sonny & Cher reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with "I Got You Babe."
